Brentford Football Club has begun a formal public consultation on plans to host up to six summer concerts each year at the Gtech Community Stadium, marking a significant step toward transforming the Premier League ground into a medium-scale music venue for west London.

The proposal, which would see concerts held on weekends between May and August when the pitch is not in use for football, is being presented as a way to bring new cultural experiences to the area while supporting local shops, restaurants and hospitality businesses. The club says the events would use the existing stadium infrastructure, with no permanent construction required, and would be managed with the same safety, stewarding and operational planning already used for matchdays.

Any concerts would require planning permission from Hounslow Council, with agreed limits on noise, curfews, transport arrangements, toilets, litter management and crowd control. Brentford argues that the Gtech offers an opportunity to introduce a professionally managed, medium-scale concert destination for west London, attracting visitors and generating new revenue at a time when football’s financial rules are tightening.

The consultation includes two public drop-in sessions for neighbours, supporters and the wider community. The first takes place on Saturday 18 July from 10am to 1pm at Brentford FC Community Sports Trust on Thomas Layton Way. The second will be held on Monday 20 July from 5pm to 8pm at the Clayton Hotel Chiswick on Chiswick High Road. Exhibition materials and a feedback survey will also be published on the club’s website from 18 July, and residents can contact the project team directly via bfcconsultation@thisislca.com.

The move follows earlier steps in June, when Brentford submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment Screening and Scoping Report to Hounslow Council — the first stage of a full planning application. The club is seeking permission for concerts with crowds of up to 24,000 people, exceeding matchday capacity by using the pitch as part of the event space. If approved, concerts could begin in 2027 with an 11pm curfew.

Environmental consultants Greengage, working on behalf of the club, argues that the proposal involves only temporary staging and equipment, with technical assessments underway covering transport, air quality, noise, socioeconomics and climate change. The scoping report acknowledges key concerns including traffic congestion, additional HGV movements during event setup and breakdown, noise impacts on nearby homes, and air quality implications in an area already designated an Air Quality Management Area.

Premier League clubs face increasingly strict spending rules, with the new Squad Cost Ratio system limiting clubs to spending 85 per cent of football-related revenue on wages and transfers. For a club with one of the smallest stadium capacities in the league, additional commercial income from summer concerts could meaningfully expand Brentford’s ability to invest in players.

However, the planning landscape for concerts in this area has become complicated. Just a short distance away, Gunnersbury Park’s attempt to secure long-term permission for major events has faced strong resident opposition, delays and cancellations. Several festivals and concerts were forced to relocate or withdraw entirely this summer due to the lack of approved permissions.

Matchday crowds of 17,250 are already a familiar part of life for neighbours, but a 24,000-capacity concert ending at 11pm presents different challenges. Noise surveys show the area already experiences elevated background sound from the M4, rail lines and Heathrow flight paths, and proposed music noise levels above 75 dB for multiple events per year may require significant mitigation.

The club’s Fan and Community Relations Director, Sally Stephens, has acknowledged the need for careful planning, saying Brentford recognises that hosting concerts “needs to be carefully planned and managed.” The consultation now underway will be crucial in shaping the club’s final application and determining whether it can build the goodwill needed to navigate the planning process smoothly.

A full planning application is expected to be submitted to Hounslow Council later this year.
