Brentford FC has expanded its ownership base with two high-profile additions to the board of its holding company, Best Intentions Analytics Limited (BIA), as part of a wider move to support the club’s long-term growth on and off the pitch.
The club announced this Monday (2 March) that Prakash Melwani, a longtime senior executive at global investment firm Blackstone, and Sir Lucian Grainge CBE, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, have joined the BIA board. Their arrival brings further commercial and strategic expertise to the organisation that oversees both Brentford FC and Spanish side Mérida AD.
Blackstone is one of the world’s largest and most influential investment firms, widely recognised as a global leader in alternative asset management. Founded in 1985 and headquartered in New York, the company manages more than $1 trillion in assets, spanning private equity, real estate, credit, infrastructure, and a wide range of other long - term investment strategies.
They join existing minority investors Gary Lubner and Sir Matthew Vaughn, whose companies—This Day Sports and Media Limited and MARV Bee Limited—have also increased their shareholdings. Sir Lucian Grainge has invested in MARV, controlled by Sir Matthew Vaughn and Lady Vaughn (Claudia Schiffer).
Matthew Benham remains the club’s majority owner, having taken full control in 2012. No other details have been released about the amounts invested and the current shareholding percentages.
The expanded investor group brings experience from finance, entertainment, media and global business leadership. Club executives say this blend of backgrounds will help Brentford develop new commercial opportunities while maintaining the values that have shaped its rise through English football.
BIA Board Chair and Brentford FC Chief Executive Jon Varney said the appointments reflect the club’s ambition to continue challenging in the Premier League.
“We are delighted to appoint Prakash and Lucian to the BIA Board. They bring decades of experience from industries that will support the club’s ambitions as we continue to challenge and thrive in the Premier League.
£Gary Lubner and Matthew Vaughn have been aligned with Matthew Benham’s vision for the club and our values since they first became shareholders. They provide valuable support to our off-pitch commercial and community growth and together with our new investors, we have an outstanding blend of people and expertise to help us keep moving forward.”
Melwani said he had long admired Brentford’s progress under Benham’s ownership and looked forward to contributing to the next phase of development.
Brentford emphasised that its community work remains central to its identity, with programmes delivered through the Brentford FC Community Sports Trust supporting residents across west London.
Lubner said the club’s social mission was a key reason for deepening his investment.
“Brentford stands for more than just football excellence. Its commitment to community, integrity and social progress reflects principles that matter most to me. The extraordinary community impact of Brentford FC, which changes lives every day across west London, exemplifies how the club prioritises long-term outcomes by creating resilience and value beyond matchday performance.”
Sir Matthew said the club’s progress since his initial investment in 2025 had reinforced his belief in Brentford’s direction.
“When Gary and I closed our first round of investment, we knew we were on to something good. And six months on, that’s proving to be true with a competitive squad, a brilliant head coach and an off-pitch team that’s second to none. It’s a privilege to be part of the Brentford family.”
In February 2025, Benham transferred his shares into the newly formed holding company Best Intentions Analytics, a move designed to open the door to new investment opportunities.
