Chris Boardman Wades in To Cycle Superhighway Debate
Challenges Chiswick councillors to find solutions rather than being 'negative'
Chris Boardman MBE, the cycling Olympic gold medal winner and former world record holder has joined in the debate on the Cycle Superhighway proposed to go through Chiswick.
On Twitter he responded to a discussion about the demonstration this Saturday (18 November) against the plan organised by Chiswick’s Conservative councillors saying, “Looking forward to hearing your proposals to reduce pollution, decrease obesity and solve congestion with increasing population.
“It’s easy to be negative, much harder to actually find solutions.”
Chris Boardman, who co-hosts Channel 4’s Tour de France coverage, has been a consistent advocate of improved cycling infrastructure.

In response Cllr Sam Hearn who represents Chiswick Homefields ward said, “We have suggestions for improvements to the High Road and neighbouring streets. We also have rather more all-encompassing proposals to tackle obesity at source.”
Prospective Tory candidate for the same ward Patrick Barr said that the turnout to Saturday’s demonstration, at which local ward councillors and Greater London Assembly representative Tony Arbour were present, had been overwhelming and that 99% of the 133 people they asked said they were opposed to the scheme.

On Twitter these claims were ridiculed by supporters of CS9 who disputed that a significant number of people had attended the demonstration and said that it was ironic the Councillors could not be heard on a video they posted over the noise of traffic from the High Road.
The nine Chiswick councillors representing the three local authority wards have outlined their criticisms in their formal response to TfL's consultation on the extension of CS9.
