A brown spaniel is running up and down Park Road and Chesterfield Road - I suspect - looking for its owner… tried to catch him twice but they seem a bit spooked… tried to follow them but too fast for me!

Fake taxis outside Sainsburys OAP scammed

A warning to anyone vulnerable who orders taxis from Sainsbury’s, mother in law booked one and was surprised at how quick it turned up, they proceeded to take her home and used a fake device for payment which obviously didn’t work, but they then managed to get her PIN code off her and proceeded to try and empty her bank account over the course of 2 hours, as they gave a card back that wasn’t hers which she didn’t notice. They are opportunists and not linked to the taxi firm Sainsbury’s use, what scumbags doing that to an 88 year old just before Christmas

Hi all, It’s that time of year again so I back on the hunt for knitting wool/yarn of any quality of ply (including unfinished projects) for the knitting group who make 'twiddle muffs' for Dementia patients, they supply various hospitals. Parking Penalty.

Can anyone with legal knowledge be able to assist please. Vehicle Control Services Limited have unlawfully given out hundreds of £100 fixed penalty tickets to motorists after parking LEGALLY in one of 4 public parking spaces in my local council car park. They have unlawfully contacted DVLA for the names of registered keepers of these vehicles. They are only allowed to receive such information if the vehicles were parked in private car parks i.e. Asda, Tesco etc. Are DVLA and Vehicle Control Services Limited at risk of criminal prosecution for breach of Data Protection.

Barons Court platform closures and Turnham Green

I was planning to write to TfL to ask that consideration be given to extra Piccadilly line services at Turnham Green while platforms are closed over the next year at Barons Court. The rationale would be that the removal of one stop creates slack in the timetable to introduce another and delays and safety issues could arise if even more people are crossing the crowded platform at Hammersmith to switch with the District line. If any body can suggest other points to strengthen the argument or likely objections that TfL will put forward, that would be really helpful.

Discarded Christmas Trees

In the last two days I've noticed a big pile of discarded Christmas trees at the southern entrance to Acton Park (still wrapped in netting so presumably unsold) and a smaller pile outside Turnham Green station (no netting so presumably people who for some reason have taken their trees down early). This seems such a waste but you now know where to go if you want a free tree.

Sad news. Interestingly, Ian won the derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Mill Reef in the same year and became champion trainer. All in the year Claire was born. The list of horses of note is far too long. But we have Son Andrew keeping up the name in stellar fashion I wonder in 2026 if Andrew would rather win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over the Epsom Derby. Only ask that, as the derby has lost its way in the racing world over many years now.

Missing Maine Coon Cat

Hi,Our brown tabby with white male Maine Coon called Lazlo went out in Christmas Eve and has not returned to date. We live in Addison Grove in Bedford Park. He may be trapped in an outbuilding, or stuck in someone’s house if the owners are away. He is very good at sneaking through cat flaps. He may also have roamed out of his area (Addison Grove/FairfaxRd/Priory Rd) and become lost. He is a strikingly large cat with a wild lynx-like appearance as Maine Coons are and is super friendly. Turkey Bone Broth/ Soup

This is something we've always made using the turkey carcase.  It makes a lovely soup without all the salt that so many ready-made soups have.This year we were away with family and the carcase was huge but I did manage to pick the remaining meat off and break the carcase up and put it into a slow cooker ready to be made before we returned home.I really miss not cooking so many roasts as we eat more vegetarian meals now.  So we rarely hsve a carcase to make soup out of.It's a great treat, makes great use of the carcase and reduces the amount of food waste to go intovthr food waste bin.The new larger slow cooker the family now have for making large stews to batch cook and freeze makes it easier.  Anyway it's safer for me and the stock as I no longer can run up or down stairs when i smell the stock catching on the pan bottom which used to happen every so often when using a large ordinary pan!

Driving into London we noticed a picture in memory of Sir Alec Reed on the billboards - neither of us had heard of him so did some research : this is the opening paragraph from his obituary in the Guardian Sir Alec Reed, who has died aged 91, built a hugely successful employment agency, one of the UK’s largest private businesses. But he will also be remembered as the man who changed the face of British philanthropy. His Big Give organisation – an imaginative way of involving rich donors in supporting charities – now raises more money at Christmas time than the BBC’s Children in Need or Comic Relief. His own foundation draws its funds from its holding of 18% of the Reed group. He used to joke that Reed employees worked one day a week for charity. Sad for his family but it does seem like a life well lived and an uplifting story- RIP.

Chiswick Tower and accessibility at Gunnersbury

Looking at the report on what was approved last night for Chiswick Tower, it seems that basically it is just a giant HMO and the intention is to cram as many people into the building as possible.I don't blame the councillors for approving it as it was the only game in town and the developer was holding a gun to their heads by dangling the possibility of an alternative with no affordable units. They also were smart in commissioning an architect to produce pretty pictures of what Gunnersbury station could look like although making it clear they weren't going to be paying. Like Chiswick Business Park before them, they have dodged any responsibility for stumping up for the much needed station upgrade and now it looks unlikely anything will happen for at least a decade. Maybe this outcome means that more attention will be given to making at least one other of Chiswick's stations step free.

Attacks on Chiswick women in the mid-nineties

Reading about the death of Carl Royal, for whom no tears will be said, dredged up some unpleasant memories. I remember when I first hear about the attacks I was uncertain if they were true. There was no internet in those days - well not for me anyway - and stories often circulated about terrible crimes. I don't recall much TV coverage and if you didn't buy the newspaper on the right day, you wouldn't get to hear about it. It wasn't until the trial that what actually happened was confirmed for most people.I was a daily commuter from Turnham Green at that time so started doing calculations of what were the chances of the victim having been me rather than someone else and the conclusion was terrifying. I never liked walking out of the station to home after dark but I started either calling my husband to collect me or using a cab from the rank if he was not around.As the memory of the crime faded, such precautions started to seem unnecessary and about a decade ago I stopped calling for a lift or getting a cab. Lone women, who had virtually disappeared from Chiswick streets after dark were returning and men's attitudes had changed, for instance crossing the road so they wouldn't be walking behind you. Last night I walked home alone late in the evening without a second thought. Crimes against women are far from a thing of the past and there is no room for complacency but Chiswick, London and the rest of the country are much safer now than they were thirty years ago. Some people seem determined to present London as a crime-ridden hell hole but the reality is that we, men as well as women, are probably safer now than we were at any point in our history.

Very disappointing to see the news about Zipcar. I did go without a car for a few months and used car clubs vehicles when needed and found them invaluable. My personal circumstances changed which meant I had to own a car and now I do wonder would it be possible ever to go back to using car clubs if provision is much less than it used to be.I was surprised to see how much was being charged for bays, particularly in Ealing. As with dockless bike hire, councils need to be careful that they don't undermine good transport iniatives by seeking to maximise revenues out of providers.

Stupidly I chose the lane that had the arrow pointing INTO the car park rather than the arrow pointing out! I only realised when I was halfway out. Katherine Dunne fails (again)

I was bemused by the puff piece on Katherine done by Chiswick Calendar. Bit surprised they didn't ask her favorite color and if she believed in unicorns. Did we need glamor shots?? Also chuckled at the coverage of the recent area forum with feedback from Katherine's colleague, Alexandra Crush.  So many issues: "Element of competition" In order for there to be competition the competitors must provide the same service. They do not. Per the article, Voi services Ealing. That's it. Forest doesn't. This necessitates needing two different suppliers that can charge whatever they like because their competitor cannot provide the same service. The concept of checks and balances does not exist. Simple economics. "truncated journeys weren't a key issue" Surely Katherine should have choked on these words. "50% less Voi than promised" and "Forest immediately increases fees after getting contract" Is it me, or have the suppliers failed to comply with the terms of the contract? If so, what's the escape clause? If a painter fails to provide the works promised in a contract, the owner would have a court case in their favor. The contract becomes null and void. "no incentive for Lime to comply" False. Wandsworth dealt with this issue by rounding up non-compliant bikes and held them ransom. When I asked Katherine about this her response was "there is no regulation." Apparently she can't do what others clearly can. "commercially sensitive information" With spending public money, how is the public not made aware of any expenditure value? There is talk about competition on an open market yet oddly the market is secret. "I wasn't there but I'm sure it was raised" Why wasn't she there and simply how could she not know??? This begs the question can a petition be started for her removal? She fails repeatedly and there is no reason anyone should endure another two years of this dreadful and unnecessary policy she has put in place. She is clearly out of her league. As for any e-bike/scooter being left where it doesn't belong, what is the line item value for Hounslow Highways to remove them? Has it exceeded it's allowance? My bet is any increase in fees Katherine dreamt of by awarding Voi and Forest is erased (and then some) by the increase in costs for HH to remove illegal vehicles now dumped by three different vendors. Not to mention, the public can't use any Lime bike found in Hounslow. So those cost of removing them is wholly borne by Hounslow. To wit on Glebe Street this AM:

Drive-In on Chiswick High Road

I was walking down Chiswick High Road at around 7.30 tonight, when an e-scooter passed me at great speed (at least 20mph) on the pavement (cycle lane 9a, as some think it). It then turned left, going through the door of Tesco and parked up in store. Dangerous on many levels, especially as it didn't appear to slow down before turning. Whatever next? Smartcars in Sainsburys? Mercedes in M&S? Please be careful out there everyone!

Waymo comes to Chiswick

I spotted a Waymo driverless car on Acton Lane a few days ago - a Jaguar E-Pace. Just to check my eyes weren't deceiving me, I looked up what the company is doing in the UK and they are indeed running trials locally. They are taking place in Ealing Borough not Hounslow so you won't see them on the High Road. There will currently always be human safety staff onboard while they run the trials but it looks like the car is driving autonomously unless they intervene. No date given for when the service is commercialised but it is already operating in LA and San Francisco.

Front pageWell, let's hope they get the points and signalling sought at Gunnersbury and Richmond, and TFL do the same for Acton and Earls Court. Far too often, the service is let down this side on those locations. Minor delays this morning but a 50 min wait to go from TG to richmond. The information at TG is non existant ON the screens and over the tannoy while we seem to have new barrier staff nowhere to be seen these days. Yeh,have a guess where they are sitting. The ladies who get moved around are the only ones that are around when at TG.

Grove park footbridge update

Here's what I just learned:1) They have now installed a temporary footbridge made of scaffolding. But not for humans, only for cables.2) This afternoon they are going to lift the old bridge off and take it away for repair and strengthening.3) They'll bring it back in 10 weeks' time and we'll get a lovely good-as-new footbridge.

Chiswick Creatives Christmas Pop Up - this weekend

Hi, I am a member of Chiswick Creatives. We are a group of local artisans who get together every month. We have been putting on a Christmas market every year since 2019 (bar 2020!) in St Michael and All Angels church parish hall (upstairs at the side) at this time of year. We will be there again this weekend, from 6.30pm tomorrow (28th November)until 8.30pm. Then also on Saturday 29th 10-5.30pm, and Sunday 30th 11.30-4pm. Please do come along to support us. EV & hybrid cars new additional tax

Following on from the budget, I'm wondering where I stand with my plug in hybrid. Currently I pay ''road tax'' but the talk is of charging plain EV drivers a sum per mile. Assuming the bill will be worked out at the MOT stage, I'll be charged for some miles that I drove via petrol which they will assume were electric battery miles. Anyone know (especially the plums at the treasury) how they propose to do the charging as I and others could still be paying the road tax as its primarily a petrol driven motor with c.30 miles on a charge?

£1,000 envelope in Hounslow

Is anyone else really angry about the story on the radio news this morning that the London Borough of Hounslow has fined a lady from Feltham £1,000 for 'fly tipping' a cardboard envelope (with her name and address left on) outside her flat, on top of a pile of boxes, as there was no room for it in the overflowing bin? It is said they are doing this as an example and to crack down on fly tipping and they will not back down, even though the lady concerned can ill afford it, suffering as a result, and insisting the entire fine is paid in one go, as they do not offer payment plans. They have, however, given her a further 30 days to pay it (their generosity of spirit knows no bounds). It seems that they want to line their coffers from innocent individuals, while big companies get away with so much more. Absolutely dreadful and scary to say the least!I would be interested to know how many users or companies have been fined for ebikes abandoned on pavements, sometimes in great numbers at a time, which block them and create further hazards for those of us who use them. None, I'm sure.I do hope there will be further (peaceful) protest about this and the lady concerned is exonerated, rather than martyred. Meantime, always remove personal details from everything and shred them!

Chiswick's perennial problem with fallen leaves

It comes this time every year, uncleared slushy pavements, often turning to ice and making walking hazardous, We sadly know that the local council will not get around to clearing the problem any time soon. Many small beer criminals are given Community sentences by magistrates and judges, but I have never witnessed such people fulfilling their unpaid work. Why cannot the local police liaise with the council and give these wrongdoers retribution for their sins by asking them to clear our streets from leaves.

94 bus

It will be a pity not to have the 94 bus serving all the way to Piccadilly. I take this bus to go to work . We won't have a direct bus to the west end anymore.  We have the 9 from piccadilly to Hammersmith but you have to change bus and often pay twice if too much traffic or waiting for the second bus (especially later in the evening ). I'm not a fan of the pedestrian of Oxford Street anyway, maybe they should focus on the money laundering shops instead

Out of control dog attack - Chiswick House today

⚠️ Serious Dog Attack at Chiswick House Today – Please Be AwarePosting anonymously for now, but I want to alert local dog owners to a serious incident that occurred today at Chiswick House.My well-trained, gentle dog was attacked for the second time in three months by the same woman’s uncontrolled and aggressive dog. On both occasions, the owner made no attempt to control her dog (a male Vizsla), refused to put it on a lead, and responded with hostility and complete disregard for the safety of others. During today’s incident, she repeatedly shouted at her dog and threw objects at it, yet told me “not to panic” while my dog was being injured.Today’s attack resulted in a deep puncture wound to my dog’s shoulder, with significant bleeding. It is clear this dog is not safe around others, and the owner’s behaviour suggests she is fully aware of this. The fact she was walking so late in the day raises further concern that she may be avoiding other owners due to her dog’s behaviour.I have reported the incident to the police and to Chiswick House. If no action is taken, I will also put up posters so other dog owners can recognise and avoid this individual. I have multiple photos and videos of both the woman and her dog - from today and from the previous attack in September - which I will be providing to the authorities. For some reason I haven’t been able to attach images here.I am sharing this to make sure other dog owners are aware of the ongoing risk. If anyone else has experienced similar behaviour from this same dog or owner, please come forward. The combination of an aggressive dog and an owner who refuses to take responsibility is a genuine danger to other pets and potentially to people as well. This situation cannot continue unchecked.

Can anyone tell me the opening hours for the Royal Mail parcel office located beside the Chiswick Post Office?I’ve waited in all day for a parcel to be delivered, and I get a notice that I’m not in!  This is not the first time this has happened, and it’s really annoying, so it's a trip to the parcel office, but I cannot find any online information about the current opening hours (I’ve gone before and found it closed).  If anyone knows the current opening hours, I’d be very grateful!

Again and again we see cases of journalistic catastrophising!  Today we see a typical example.  A Guardian HEADLINE of  ‘Households face SHOCK increase in Energy Bills from January”. After reading the lengthy article it appears that households, with average usage (£1728 per annum)  will see bills increase by 28pence a month or just over £3 per annum!  Really!!  What a shock!  Many people will now lose sleep worrying. Their Christmas celebrations will be spoilt by the Guardian advising that bills will increase. And in the real world people are losing their homes in Ukraine.

I see that in the last 4 hours, Venezuela's airspace has been emptied and all Planes are diverting around. Normally, the airlines are tipped off in advance, or are warned that something has happened and reported from a flight that, as a precaution, the airspace is closed down. Mouse inside my bathroom wall!

Mouse inside my bathroom wall! I am on first floor and had a long-term illegal pet last year, thus the virtual hermetic sealing around every skirting board, pipe and cable holes in my flat I have humane traps around the bathroom, but not much use if said mouse is still inside the wall! I have been serenading said visitor in half hour stints of 5 different so-called rodent repellant soundtracks on YouTube, Iron Maiden, Cannible Corpse, Full of Hell, currently trying Petbrick with Napalm Death lined up..... Because it sounds as though it is trying to break through the grouting in tiled wall, the volume of the scratching/digging is reverberating all around my flat, driving me up the walls! I am meant to be finishing some work, but can only focus on rodent noise.      I am looking at 2 options right now, either I dig out a tile or 2, then ask landlord for forgiveness, or just take piles and folders of work down the pub, hope this visitor gives up or makes it into loaded humane traps.    Anyone have a better plan I could try?????

Termination of 94 AND 7 bus routes

As the news here suggests there is a new consultation from TFL that highlights the intention to curtail the 94 bus route at Marble Arch once Oxford St is pedestrianised. However this will also affect the 7 bus route from East Acton.This is undoubtedly to reduce the congestion on the back roads but it unfairly penalises West Londoners from reaching the West End by bus without either walking up to a new bus stop or taking the tube which is more expensive and sometimes less convenient. The 12 is long gone and the 23 has already been rerouted via Piccadilly and Park Lane leaving West London with no bus access to Oxford Street. The lesson learnt from a walk

A walk in the park.Most people would pass without noticing. But beneath the shelter of an old tree sat a man - we’ll call him John - in his late 50s—hunched, exhausted, and barely holding himself together. His clothes were unwashed, his face gaunt with hunger. He hadn’t eaten a proper meal in a week. He was homeless, hopeless, and at the very edge of giving up.But help arrived in the most unexpected way.A volunteer from a local homeless charity stopped, spoke to him, and truly listened. He gently referred him to Hammersmith & Fulham food bank—and walked with him there himself. That simple act of compassion set everything in motion. Through the food bank, John received not just a meal, but a lifeline. He was connected with housing support, guided through the system, and is now on the path toward the stability he desperately needed.Little by little, thanks to food bank, he is rebuilding his life.Hang on, what’s a food bank got to do with this? Everything.There’s more to the food bank than asking for donations at a supermarket or dishing out food in a church hall and sending people on their way. The people who come to the Hammersmith and Fulham food banks have a voice; they are listened to. There’s help and hope whether it’s for Sim cards or advice on fuel payments, difficulties with landlords, assistance for those suffering financial hardship, safety for sufferers of coercive partners.The case of the unfortunate man lost in the park is just one specific example which tells you a lot about the work the food banks do. Why am I telling you this? The food banks and people who rely on them need your help. On Thursday, November 27 and Friday 28 there will be a collection at Tesco, Brook Green. I know, those irritating people asking you to donate a tin of something, a packet of something else. But here’s a thing, if everyone who goes to Tesco over those two days donated only one tin, one packet of biscuits, one jar of jam, the effect would be immeasurable. It would bring joy to hundred of people, old and young.And I’m going on about this because the food banks in the area need volunteers. People who can make a difference and make other s feel a tad happier.One place where people find a welcome is The Hub in Bloemfontein Road, White City, (open Tuesday to Friday) where people call by for a chat and advice. A clothes rack is open on Tuesday, there are lessons for those struggling with English, help for the troubled, and a book club. There is always a warm welcome from Chaudhry, the manager. He understands the problems people face and he knows how to help. There’s coffee and cake too! Labour tax and spend

they have learnt nothing for being in the wilderness, Tax & spend so they claimed the Tories left a 20 Billion so they raised 40 billion killing off many small businesses and hospitality with the employer NI increase. So having spent out 40 billion they need to raise even more money, blame everyone else. When if ever are they going to take responsibility for their own actions? What about controlling spending? Welfare bill is outrageous there are no checks so I dread to think about the fraud going on using our taxes. I heard a statistics on Politics live that 1 in 4 new cars on the road is funded by the government including BMW and Mercedes is this right? Shocking. They have killed the housing market with all the rumours. People taking out their 25% tax free element on pensions again due to rumours and Labour pulling pensions into IHT. They have no clue how to handle the economy, it should be illegal for any government to meddle with tax respectively on items like pensions. Of course Labour are support working people and the only definition I can work out who are working people is those on benefits so much for going for economic growth they do it by spending our money! That does not work. Now they are blaming Brexit they seem to forget we had a referendum and it was the people’s choice. When will they ever take any responsibility? We have the highest energy bills in the world how’s on earth do they think business can compete? Rant over 😂

Yippee! More traffic cameras.

It would be nice if before more were installed Hounslow could make the ones they have work properly. We are currently fighting a tidal wave of PCNs wrongly issued for accessing Hartington Road, the cause of which seems to be that we changed vehicle. It was all properly registered for the "White List" and for a couple of weeks all was well, until suddenly the PCNs started. Of course there is nobody you can actually talk to and every ticket has to be laboriously appealed. Does anyone know how this can happen? It's as if suddenly  an out-of-date data list is being used. Any advice or wisdom to share?

Proposed Documentary.

Maybe a bit of good news. Documentary maker Marcel Theroux contacted me 2 weeks ago to discuss the unsolved murders of 8 women in the Hammersmith district of London between 1959 and 1965. We had a long chat today and Marcel is pitching an idea to a national broadcaster linking Abertillery born child killer Harold Jones to these unsolved murders. Marcel is a reputable broadcaster being the presenter of 'Heist: Robbing the Bank of England' which documented the 1990 Bank of England bond heist which saw a theft of £ 292 million. He also presented the 2023 documentary the "Bunny Girl Murders." Marcel is the brother of renowned documentary maker Louis Theroux.

Stolen Amazon delivery

My CCTV caught the lowlife who stole my Amazon delivery this afternoon. I suspect he watched the delivery driver unload as he then appeared on the pavement opposite watching the house. Then went out of site and a second later swooped and stuffed the packages in a Sainsbury's bag for life (probably stole that too). White male, 30-40, dressed in navy/black with a baseball cap on with a prominent H on it (probably stole that from somewhere too). Hope Amazon refund and am reporting to the police on 101 online. Nothing exciting in said parcels so he will be very disappointed. What an absolute loser.

CPZ charging levels

Hi I was renewing my CPZ permit and I thought the charge a bit high so I checked the emissions table that is used to calculate charges. OK, so my emissions are also a bit high but within the ULEZ level 4 (petrol) requirements.Does anyone know the algorithm used to do this calculation?(fwiw, if I had off road parking it wouldn't matter how high my emissions are. Seems a bit strange that I have to pay to park off road - I would have thought that covered by Road Tax - but not in my driveway, if I had one. Am I the only one who thinks that the BBC should tell The tangerine tosser - known as Donald Trump, where to shove his threats of a lawsuit against the BBC? As a lawyer pointed out this morning - the time for him to take action here has lapsed by two weeks, and to pursue this in the U.S. in Florida is a problem as the Panorama programme wasn't shown there anyway.Usually when someone demands money with threats attached if you don't cough up, it is regarded as blackmail. Trump is possibly one of the biggest liars breathing and has managed to beat the American press into submission and lined his pockets doing it. The man is a bully and shyster, yes, the BBC should apologise, but that's where all this should stop. The BBC is held to far higher standards than that of many other media outlets, and by and large do a fair and reasonable job we would be long sorry to lose it. Time to take a stand and put the orange one back in his box.

Have just caught up with the story on the main page about the recent enforcement exercise to take illegal e-bikes off the street. About time! These modified bikes, and the ones that are designed to go at speed and which should really be classed as motorbikes, are a menace to other cyclists, road users and pedestrians. And what a surprise (not) to find that the operation coincidentally snared drug dealers, illegal immigrants and violent offenders. It's well known that there is a similar level of criminality among drivers who drive untaxed and un-MOT'd cars.

Stolen property

A few weeks ago, my car was stolen from outside my house in Grove Park. Last week, some of the contents of my car were found by the side of the A272 near Haywards Heath, along with items I suspect were from at least one other stolen car. One of these items was a red cap with the words 'Cabin Crew British Airways'. The items that were not mine include costume jewellery and some wrist watches.The finder is sending me the items she discovered by the side of the road. Car Parking illegal fines.

Is there anyone on this forum who could advise please.After receiving 2x£100 parking fines in Iceland car park Abertillery they were later scrapped because I proved I was parked legally.Last week I received another £100 fine for again parking legally. A photo they took again showed me going in and going out of the car park but not in the legal parking space. I will be seeing a solicitor to sue the parking company for harassment.In April and May  2025 my local newspaper the South Wales Argus published 4 stories regarding dozens of motorists being fined with the same happening to them as it did to me. We were threatened with enormous costs and bailiffs taking possessions from our property if the fines were not paid. After appealing my 2 fines the firm apologized and sent me a letter of apology. Dozens of motorists weren't so fortunate and paid the fines out of fear. Many more motorists are still now having these illegal fines for parking in 1 of 4 public car parking space which clearly state Public Parking Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. Excellent Kitchen Fitter

I was badly stung by a cowboy builder bathroom fitter recently,  so was extremely wary when it came to replacing my kitchen.  I was struggling to find a decent kitchen fitter then searched this forum and found an old recommendation for Paul Howells (07769 119095) of Premier Installations Ltd (kitchen and media fitters).  I asked around and got glowing reports back, so engaged them.  Paul and his team were brilliant, very diligent and professional and did an exceptional job.  They went above and beyond expectation and addressed all my concerns (blocking mice holes was a big one!) and did so within the very reasonable quote.  They were also a pleasure to have around.  I can’t recommend them highly enough and have no connection other than being the recipiant of a fabulous, excellently fitted kitchen*!  *I was set to go with Wren kitchens when Paul suggested I try West London Kitchens [Keith Patterson: 020 8741 1981], which I did. I now have a gorgeous German kitchen of much better quality than the Wren one I was intending to get, and at not much more cost.  I love it.  Again, no connection other than being a very satisfied customer.

At this special time of year for Christians, I can scarcely believe the combination of indifference to the plight of Gaza and the parochialism and meanness of spirit shown on the forum in the past 24 hours. Whilst Gaza is destroyed and several hundreds of lives are lost, local preoccupations seem to be either petty hatred of cyclists and the local authority which is supposedly in thrall to them, or an obsession with 'woke' culture. No District Line trains tonight

Apparently no trains from/to Richmond, Ealing Broadway and Upminster since 18:05, according to the handwritten sign on the board. The control room at Turnham Green is in darkness with nobody there and the only staff member was behind the barriers, on her phone and she walked away when I approached. Journey abandoned! Large Tree to be destroyed near Post Office

I happened to read the Planning Application posted at the building site (formerly Independiente Studios) to the right of the post office.  It has allowed for the destruction of tbe very large, seemingly healthy tree at the front of the building.I emailed Hounslow Planning Dept to enquire why a TPO was not placed on this tree.  The reply was that the applicant had obtained their own arboricultural assessment which stated the "tree was in decline".  If you see this tree, it certainly doesn't appear to be in decline.If you feel the same way about protecting this tree, please contact Hounslow Planning and quote PA 2025/1070 - The Drill Hall, 3 Heathfield Terrace, Chiswick W4 4JE as this matter needs to be reviewed further.

His email address is ‘parking@rjen.uk’It's been a bumper year for Richard’s hobby of helping people fight unfair Penalty Charge Notices.  It all started in 2007 when he received a PCN for parking outside his house.  Hounslow claimed that he had violated the suspension that his neighbours had organised in connection with their move away from Chiswick, but he was actually helping the neighbours on that day. Hounslow rejected two appeals, so Richard did more research and submitted a 4-page appeal to the adjudicators. Hounslow took one look at it and decided not to contest it.  Case won - PCN cancelled!Richard started to use that experience to help others, and so far this year he has helped in a record 58 cases. He says he doesn't work miracles, but there are often obscure processes that can unlock difficult cases.  For example, if a PCN should have been posted to a driver but never arrived, the penalties can rapidly increase, but Richard can advise how to get a court in Northampton (Traffic Enforcement Centre) to wind back the excessive penalties and enable the PCN to be appealed. I live in a heavily treed part of Bedford Park, and for many years I’ve tried to be a considerate neighbour and responsible member of the community by sweeping the fallen leaves from the pavement outside my home. I’ve always disposed of them in my own garden waste bin — at my own cost. I also clear the pavement outside my property in winter after snowfall or when it's icy, to help keep it safe for pedestrians.Last year, I noticed that Hounslow Council didn’t start leaf-sweeping in my area until December. In the meantime, it was really upsetting to see how slippery and dangerous the pavements became — I know of several neighbours who were genuinely anxious about walking in the area. I reported the issue several times via StreetMap, but nothing changed.Recently, I read that some residents in the borough have started sweeping the leaves into the gutter instead of using their own garden bins, arguing that it's the council’s responsibility to remove them. I tried this myself last week, but was quickly challenged by two people (not my immediate neighbours). They said I was potentially obstructing drainage and could even face a fine, and that by sweeping the leaves, I was letting the council "off the hook" from doing their job.I tried to explain that, in my experience, the council hasn’t increased their efforts regardless of whether residents help or not. And I honestly thought a clear, safe pavement was better than slippery leaves — even if it means some water pooling in the road.Now I’m genuinely unsure what’s the right thing to do. I don’t want to create more problems or upset people, but I also don’t feel comfortable doing nothing when I can see the hazard to pedestrians. Is there any guidance or advice on how residents can handle this responsibly — both legally and in terms of community values?

Operation Choke-Chis continues unabated

With the High Road now semi-blocked nearly 24/7, our vital work to clamp down on freedom of movement in W4 continues! The District Line is on its knees, Burlington Lane is blocked for who knows how long, while the footbridge at Chiswick Station will be out of order until well into 2026, maybe even 2027. And as for the Mildmay Line, the frequent delays and cancellations are also encouraging. Plenty of other road works going on too, with admirably little visible work being done. Victory is within our grasp comrades!!

The suppressed report on LTNs

If even TfL's favourite academic can't come up with data that shows LTNs don't reduce car use, perhaps it is now time for everyone to admit what always seemed blindingly obvious from the start. This doesn't create the basis for scrapping all of them but it does mean that local authorities should be looking at where their schemes displace traffic to. There needs to be hard questions asked about whether or not some of these schemes have been manipulated to make nice roads nicer and roads were the less well off live, more polluted.

Unite The Kingdom Protest

If you only heard about this protest from the mass media, you would have been fed propaganda and lies, as we have seen through Covid.Hundreds of thousands of people marched in unity, far more than the 110,000 reported. I remember the BBC reporting just ‘a thousand’ at an anti-lockdown protest, which later was shown to be more like 500,000.  The little trouble there was happened when Police allowed the counter-protesters to meet the main crowd. Just 25 were arrested on Saturday and I’m sure many of them were ‘Antifa’. Compare this with 528 arrests at Notting Hill this year and 857 arrests at the Palestine Action in September, which had similar numbers attending. Where was the condemnation by Starmer then? He certainly hasn’t mentioned the Gospel singers, the Haka troupe or the many Veterans proudly marching for their country. Nor will he mention the counter-protesters shouting anti-semitic slogans and the so kind ‘liberals’ chanting ‘Charlie’s in a box’. What a lovely bunch they are.Even the Met Police have been caught out lying, by posting a photo showing violence against them. Except that photo was not from Saturday but from a protest in 2020.  When there is such a leftist agenda from the Government to the media, gaslighting and lying to the public, then they are the ones creating huge division in this country and can not be trusted.

5 Forest + 1 Lime + 1 Voi = 1 trip home

As if further evidence is needed Katherine Dunne's new e-bike policy is an abject failure:Tried taking a Forest from Kensington to Chiswick. A trip made loads of times with one single Lime hire. The first Forest died en route. So I stopped to exchange bikes while still in Kensington. I could not. A total of four bikes "unavailable." Keep in mind I've paid for a bundle of minutes that are now inaccessible and set to expire. So I jumped on a Lime knowing I'd be in for a transfer. Left the Lime with all others by St Peters Square. Of course the app doesn't like that option but I submitted the photo anyway with plenty of context showing their own vehicles. Rather than attempt Forest again (why would anyone) I walked to Netheravon to get a Voi. While walking I contacted Forest customer service just for fun. Was told the first bike that died "was going through a connection issue preventing rides on further bikes until the "ride" ended, which could take a few minutes." That never happened with Lime. If there was an issue, it was an instantaneous swap and you'd get full credit for the initial ride. Lime gave credit for any ride that had a problem. With Forest, they simply take your money regardless of what happened. Their equipment failed, their app failed and you're expected to wait and pay for the privilege.Um...no.

Warning - some Mid Chiswick Streets no unrestricted Sunday parking

From this coming Sunday it will not be possible to park for free on streets such as Windmill Road, Elliott Road and parts of Chiswick Common Road. The restrictions which apply on weekdays will now also apply on Sundays mainly to resident bays.  So do let people know in order to avoid unwelcome parking tickets this Sunday. Check signs carefully. The restrictions have been brought in after a long three year process as residents found themselves unable to park near their own homes on Sundays.   Other streets like Linden Gardens have had similar restrictions for a long time and there are some restrictions in East Chiswick. But there are still several places where free parking is possible on a Sunday in Chiswick.

Resident parking permit woes

Is it just me? The renewal notice for the permit came in and having following the link as I always have I can't get anywhere with it. The Hounslow website refused to accept my log-in (which was correct but never mind) I reset the password (more than once) and that seemed to be accepted. However trying to log-in with the new password(s) doesn't work either. There seems to be no way to call anyone so I've resorted to the only channel of communication which is an email via "tarantoportal.com".They give themselves 10 working days to reply so the permit may well have expired by the time anyone gets round to replying.Is this normal these days, and is it even legal to enforce internet only systems with no other means of contact?

Proposed withdrawal of 60+ Oyster

I am horrified. This has been an absolute lifeline. As I am forced to work for at least 7 years longer than my expected retirement age, this is the least that I can expect having not, by the way, benefitted from free travel when I was of school age as is the case now.In fact there are many more discounted and free options open to young people now that I had to pay full price for when I had very little money and no parental support. Not everyone over 60 owns a mortgage-free property or for that matter owns a property. Not everyone drives a car.Perhaps if TfL stopped wasting money on pointless re-painting of road crossings and re-branding of rail lines they might have a bit more to spare to continue to fund this small concession.

Padel Courts on Common Land

So Rocks Lane Padel is seeking approval for two changes at the facility on Chiswick Back Common.  There is in fact rather more to this story than would appear at first glance. What is being proposed: - the permanent retention of protective vinyl panels on the western padel courts, and the extension of operational hours for floodlights.from 7:00am to 11:00pm daily. (Currently, lighting is officially permitted only between 8:00am and 10:00pm on weekdays and 8:00am until 9:00pm on weekends)What the report doesn’t say is that Rocks Lane already been operating in this way since 2022 even though that is not permitted by the terms of their 2004 agreement with Hounslow or allowed by terms of their existing planning permission. The application they have made would appear to be a retrospective one to “fix” that.  It is unclear whether the 2004 agreement with Hounslow has been or is intended to be amended. The vinyl panels have been in place since 2022 and although they are retractable they have in fact never ever been retracted during that time.  They are pretty unsightly and Rock Lane have recently applied to put in even more. If this was a private facility, on private land, with private parking facilities and well screened from public view it might be argued that Mr Warren was entitled to create a high price private club for members who were happy to travel long distances and pay such high prices.  The last known figure that Hounslow Council was receiving as a “use fee” was just £2000 per year.  But this is all happening on Chiswick Back Common which is Common Land which is there as a public amenity and as clearly stated in the 2004 agreement as community facility for local people and intended to be at affordable prices.  The agreement emphasised the requirement to be good neighbours.  Common land should is not generally supposed to have permanent buildings on it - the whole point is that they are supposed to be preserved as Open Spaces.  The clue is in the name. In the event that Common Land does get built on - this should only happen with consent from the Secretary of State with the Open  Spaces Society being a statutory consultee.  None of this appears to have happened or is this being proposed for either the existing constructions or for the proposed constructions.  Most of the space at Rocks Lane Chiswick can now only be used for padel which while it is an enjoyable and increasingly popular sport is impacting other popular but more accessible sports such as football, netball and tennis which also have more flexible spaces. But they are of course less profitable than the padel courts which are being hired out at between `£57 and £64 per hour. Is this the right way to go for an important area of Common land?

Brazen shoplifting in High Road

At 4:15pm yesterday I was in the EE shop in the High Road (No. 276) when three villains attempted to rob the store of new Samsung mobile phones displayed to the left of the entrance inside the shop.There were ten of us - six customers, four staff - inside the shop. Fortunately, one of the staff (a young woman; her first day there) spotted this scout sent in on his own to check out the store. She quietly alereted the manager who promptly locked the entrance door after the scout left. About two minutes later three masked men wearing balaclavas and sun glasses tried to smash into the store. Luckily, the front door held firm.Us inside the shop stared out at the would-be thieves in mute amazement. They stood for a time on the other side of the High Road (outside Wyndhams the butcher) staring at us. Then we gave the shop assistant a round of applause for her quick thinking.The manager reported the incident to the police and two officers did arrive about half an hour later by which time, of course, there was no sign of the miscreants. No doubt one more useless and too-late report was filed somewhere. And all this took place within sight of the old closed Chiswick police station!Quite an afternoon!

Whilst "Hounslow" may have had a proud past ... the name today conjures up, in my view, the dreadful state of the scene in Hounslow High Street and it's environs.It's nothing to be proud of ... in fact this morning I have the dreaded task of having to visit Barclays Bank there ... having to side- step ugly scenes and the likelihood of being pestered en route.Then living miles away from there one is still under the 'umbrella' of that name "Hounslow"We need a new name!London Borough of "Magnolia" ?London Borough of  ?Any thoughts or ideas?

Bird watching

I have just seen a red kite lazily patrolling the skies over Bedford Corner and Chiswick Back Common. I have long been aware of these birds getting ever closer to central London down the M4 and M3 corridors ever since their reintroduction some years back. They are now a regular sight on the way to and from Heathrow and I knew it was only a matter of time before they came to town. They are a wonderful sight but small furry creatures might not be quite  happy to see them nor the foxes, as I'm sure they'll soon be availing themselves of the discarded fast food and overflowing bins in our parks and green spaces. On balance though I welcome them.

Litter Bins.

Last evening whilst walking past Waterstones I was taken aback to see a woman with two little girls merrily emptying the contents of a carrier bag into a litter bin, the items I saw several of were girls shoes. She was still there posting as I reached the end of the M&S hoarding. This evening, as I was entering Homefield park a man came from the other side of the road following me into the park, he placed a carrier bag, of which I presumed to be rubbish, into the waste bin,he saw me looking back and continued into the park for a dozen steps, them turned around and left only to cross the road and go into one of the houses on Chiswick Lane. Just why?

New facilities at Chiswick Rugby Club

The club has been under new management over the last couple of years and the place has been transformed to be honest. Lots of parking, new changing rooms, big events space, BBQ and "costa-grade" coffee. Clean, spacious and very welcoming. Tons of kids from Mini-minis to six-formers playing on Sundays, it is a delight to witness(as a parent and general rugby supporter). Rugby World Cup

I don’t usually post on this forum, or indeed on any forums, with negative comments, but I was really disappointed this evening when I went to Chiswick High Road to watch the opener of the Women’s Rugby World Cup. I’d booked a pub for dinner and to watch the game as they were advertising it, but I had to ask them to put it on and missed the sound for the first 5 minutes of the match. There was no one else in the pub watching it so we decided to move somewhere else for a bit more atmosphere. The second pub refused to show the match because Chelsea v West Ham men’s were on. The third pub had several screen showing both games, but would only turn the sound on on the big screen showing Premier League. By no means am I expecting there to be crowds to watch the matches as women’s rugby is still relatively in its infancy, but it was the opening game of a home World Cup where we’re favourites to win. I’ve been in these pubs when they’re full to the brim for Men’s 6 Nations - after all West London is a pretty rugby heavy area!This tournament is going to bring women’s rugby to life here and it’s a shame that Chiswick doesn’t seem to want to get on board.

Voi Bikes Beware...

I got a Voi to go from Chiswick to Mortlake as the trains aren't running. I did wonder if it would work south of the river but it looked ok on the app. (and google said it would)Ugh, as soon as I crossed Chiswick Bridge it went on a go-slow, and said I was in a no riding zone. But I had no option but to continue to Mortlake or I would have missed my train. IT'S ONLY WHEN YOU ZOOM OUT ON THE APP YOU SEE ANYTHING SOUTH OF THE  RIVER IS A NO-GO ZONE.Of course, it wouldn't let me end the ride and so I spent a stressful few minutes trying to get past their chat bots to an actual human. This seemed to take ages but to be fair they were eventually helpful, and agreed not to fine me for breaking the rules. I know the Lime Bikes were annoying street clutter. But at least the service worked, and the app was ok. And you could actually go where you wanted with them. But this change, and banning them from Hounslow, seems like a regressive step. To do this journey I'd have had to dump the Voi just before Chiswick Bridge... and then get  LIME from there the rest of the way to Mortlake station. Might as well get an Uber instead...

Dawat - Devonshire Road

Hi,There were some recent posts about Dawat on Devonshire road which is a new restaurant.  Mostly, people were unhappy that it wasn’t licensed for alcohol.  I bought a Tandori Chicken and Chickpea curry from there today for dinner and I was delighted.  The food was excellent and the takeaway specials very good value.  I bought two takeaway specials and split it up.  The price is not much different to a M&S curry ready meal but the food far better.Since M&S is out of order Dawat will be on my Friday night rotation.I have no connection to Dawat and am merely a neighbour!Joe

Hounslow Council tonight gave consent for a 10 storey block on Hogarth Roundabout

The existing five storey block will be replaced by a 10 storey block. Approval had already been given for a six storey block. Cllr John Todd was the only member of the Committee to vote against it. He of course was the only committee member who actually represents a Chiswick Ward. There was pathetic pleading by a Labour Councillor to reduce the parking spaces from 67 to 37 (kind of missing the point surely?) he was ignored. Only a tiny proportion of the flats will be "affordable". Not sure how this addresses London's housing shortage, but no doubt the headline statistics will look good.

Chiswick High Road shops

So, Cotswolds has gone. Why? Because the landlord wants to split the site into 3 separate units, and rent each out separately. Good luck with that! Cotswolds was a destination shop, so people would take the trouble to go to that end of the High Road, also near Halfords, similarly, a destination business. I gather that the old Lloyds Bank is to become a Wholefoods store? Presumably a mini one? It's not the cheapest of food stores but perhaps astute, being close to the market stall? I can't see The White Company lasting very long. Curiously, it's not mentioned on their main website.

Chiswick Book Festival

I attended several events at the Chiswick Book Festival last weekend, with a friend, as her husband was unable to go with her. The events were very good, though a couple of them had many empty seats, which was sad and must have been demoralising for the authors concerned. I thought back to the early years of the Book Festival, when day passes were available and many more events were fuller as a result, as people were able to see more, and went to things for which they would not normally have paid. I loved the day passes and went to so many fascinating and diverse events a talks as a result. I would therefore ask the organisers to reinstate them next year, even just on a standby basis, with events that need filling made available to pass holders on the day, or even an hour or two before they started. Doing this would not only increase audience numbers and make those authors running the events feel more valued, but would also doubtless increase revenue for the festival itself.

Elias Shoes - shop closure

I was in the shop yesterday and learnt that it would be closing at the end of this month.  This was indeed sad news as we have been regular customers for over 40 years.  The reason given was the difficulty of finding staff who are skilled and reliable.  Over the last year they have relied on opening Friday and Saturday and doing all the repairs etc. in their Richmond shop but this is not proving to be economically viable.If you have items to be collected you will have to do so in the next 2 weeks.The good news is that their services will continue to be available at their Richmond premises.  That shop is called Richmond Leatherworks, 404 Richmond  Road, TW1 2EB.  There will be a note in the window with the details.All is not lost for the shop, there will be something special coming in September once the legal paperwork is done and licences, etc. have been granted.

Attempted burglary last night

Following a successful break in on the 16th of June in which 4 bicycles were stolen and our gate lock broken; there was another attempt last night during which they attempted to batter down, very noisily, our reinforced gate which, this time, withstood their assault.We have bright lights that come on when anyone enters but that does not seem to deter them. On the 16th, they also climbed the stairs and tried the luckily locked door of a studio on the second floor but ran away on being asked, through the door, who they were.The police came the next day but we have heard no more from them. Can anyone suggest what more we can do?

London's housing starts crisis

Although the article on the front page is focused on Ealing, the overall London numbers are so low that it can only be assumed that similar trends have been seen in Hounslow. For anyone paying attention this should not have come as a surprise even though the numbers are shocking when laid out in full detail.The developing crisis in housing starts in London has been a slow car crash. It has come about not because there is no demand or because house builders don’t want to build but because of the financial situation of affordable housing providers.The Watermans Arts Centre project is just one of many examples of a housing association not being able to take on the affordable units allocated and therefore blocking an otherwise ‘shovel ready’ project.This situation has come about due to a combination of inflation and well meaning legislation such as Awaab’s Law meant to protect tenants but which has significantly increased the cost of housing provision.The time has come to accept that ‘affordable’ housing targets are contributing to homes becoming more unaffordable to all both in terms of rent and sales price.As there is no government funding available to sort out this problem, the solution can only come from the private sector. Nobody actually builds an ‘unaffordable’ home – house builders will build homes that people want to buy.While it is clear that social rent homes are still needed for those in real need, much of the ‘affordable’ units supplied in London are of the intermediate kind which are essentially subsidised housing for relatively well-off people. Even these are not serving their intended purpose with shared ownership brewing up to be a major scandal over the next few years with so many people who bought them ending up being on the hook for huge sums.One way to revive housing starts in London would be to tell developers that already consented projects would be relieved of the obligation to deliver intermediate affordable units and would get a Community Infrastructure Levy payment holiday or reduction if the homes were ready for occupation by a certain date.Going forward the whole strategy of affordable housing needs to be rethought but the obvious step would be to give local authorities a fixed delivery target rather than one set as a percentage of all new homes.

Padel Courts now closing in line with their licence.

I understand from Hounslow Council that their noise enforcement team have visited Chiswick’s Padel Courts. For the past 2 evenings the floodlights have been turned off at 22:00 sharp rather than 23:00 or in the case of recent Saturday nights past midnight. This is a most welcome development from the Council. Let’s hope we do not return to the casual management of the rules by the Padel Company.

I changed my car at the end of June and told LBH traffic because I was on the exemption database for the Grove Park LTN. I got an email from them confirming my new car was on the exemption list for Hartington/Stavely LTN. Since then I have had 6 pcns, the latest being today. THe nice lady in Traffic has sent Serco a message to confirm this, but they have paid on attention. LBH complaints does not cover this. This is not parking so I can't ask Richard Jennings. Anyone got any idea what I can do? every time one comes in I have to challange it and I am very fed up

Pocklington Lodge, Rylett Road W12

Spotted this on Nextdoor.Public Meeting To Protect The Homes Of Local Visually Impaired Tenants. Some of you may know Pocklington Lodge on Rylett Road, a block for blind and partially sighted tenants that's been a part of the neighbourhood for decades. The block is owned and run by the charity, Thomas Pocklington Trust, who now plan to sell it. I write as one of fifty very anxious residents. Most of us want the Trust to remain as our landlord, whose £170,000,000 funds are founded on the legacy of a local watchmaker, Thomas Pocklington, who died in 1935. However, if the sale goes through, we want to ensure that any new owner honours our tenancies, retains the function of the building for blind and partially sighted people, and doesn't suddenly increase our rents. In the past couple of months, there's been a Metro article about the situation, and an episode of the Radio 4 programme, In Touch. We would really appreciate your support, and, if you would like to find out more, our public meeting will be taking place in the restaurant half of The Duchess Public House on Wednesday 13 August from 6 to 7PM. What A Racket

It was totally unfair for the bands to impose extreme noise levels for so long.The bass, drums and vocals were screaming easily heard at Turnham Green.This was also a great disservice to the elderly and those who live in the many care homes of Acton and chiswick.Councilors and MP’s need to be informed.Sunday should be respected as a day of rest.

Gunnersbury Park Noise

I appreciate this is an old chestnut and that there is some discussion on another thread but we are finding the noise from the events at Gunnersbury Park particularly intrusive this year. We live in Oxford Road South so I'm guessing it will also affect people living in the Gunnersbury area - although it also seems to extend to Grove Park. It was odd to hear the commentators at the match at the GTech on Friday comment on the disturbance. I am posting this to share the response to an email I sent on Saturday (gunnersbury.locals@festivalrepublic.com) : very friendly with the comment that "it is vital that I hear from local residents as otherwise their experiences will not be taken into consideration". I think this only applies to the events today and next weekend promoted by Festival Republic (with a different contact point for the September events) but I wanted to pass that on. I hope that this is also on the radar for our local councillors (particularly Chiswick Riverside) when it comes to planning next year but I would suggest that the number and scale of these events (15-20000 people) is getting out of hand here. But in the short term I'd encourage anyone who feels affected to register their views.

some well-meaning advice to da yoof of today

1) when you've hacked a Lime bike and finished with it, you don't have to throw it on the middle of the pavement where it might trip up your granny2) Even if you have hacked a Lime bike, you don't have to ride it on the pavement3) If you ride your hacked Lime bike with no hands, while looking at your mobile phone, you're really quite likely to fall off! 4) We passers-by really don't deserve the joy of listening to your boombox music as you pass by with the telltale clicking wheels - teach us a lesson and wear headphones!5) Likewise, we don't deserve the joy of looking at your half-clad bum sticking out over your trousers at half-mast - get a belt and leave all that to the plumbers!!

London Irish - the Boys are Back in Town?

It's really great to hear that London Irish are getting the backing to return to professional rugby and that west London is their preferred base.As far as I am aware the Loftus Road pitch is now deemed too narrow so Brentford's stadium may be the only option. As the previous arrangement seemed to work so well, it is hard to see an argument against a return.It would be great to see them in the URC as games against the Irish provinces would be massive and it would be brilliant to walk to watch South African stars. However I am guessing that floating this possibility is a way of putting pressure on the English league to fasttrack them back to the top division.

Dog attack - Southfield Park

A warning - on Wednesday this week at about 9.15pm I was walking with my daughter around Southfield Park. Near the tennis courts we came across a group of about 4 dogs with a female, middle-aged dog-walker. The dogs were mainly small ones but one was a brown-coloured, knee-height (I think) British bulldog. The dogs were agitated for some reason and the bulldog ended up attacking me with no provocation, jumping on me and biting my arm. The dog walker did nothing for about 30 seconds, and then grabbed the dog's harness to pull it off me. I walked away, but about a minute later, the dog chased me near the playground - it still had not been put on a lead! I had cuts to my hand which drew some blood, so I've had to take antibiotics in case of infection. I'm a dog lover who grew up with dogs, but this incident has left me rattled - my daughter was also distressed. Watch out for this dog. It doesn't look a dangerous breed, but if it attacked me as a 6ft adult male, what would it do to a child?

Food at The Tabard

Having enjoyed many a drink in the Tabard over the last few decades, I can't recall ever having eaten there. However, my partner and I had dinner there last night and we were extremely impressed. The portion sizes were extremely generous, both dishes were freshly cooked and the quality of ingredients was excellent. My huge fillet of cod was covered in a light and very crispy batter, served with fluffy triple cooked chips and crushed peas, rather than mushy, which had a slight kick of spice and were delicious, while my partner's hake and romesco ragout was beautifully presented and was a fantastically tasty combination. I only wish I could include photos here. We really don't know why we haven't eaten there before, as it was superb, and can't wait to go back to try other dishes, and desserts, which we were too late to order, but sounded equally appealing. Highly recommended for a delicious and fairly priced local lunch or dinner.

A backward step on EVs

London Councils are claiming that their new guidance on EV charging is a huge step forward i.e. that cross pavement charging should be done in recessed gullies. The reality is that they have removed the ambiguity over whether or not covered leads are allowed. Some councils had already specifically banned them and some had just turned a blind eye but this will now be more difficult.I don't have an EV and am not planning to buy one but I do believe that everything should be done to make them as affordable as possible. This policy seems to be framed on the assumption that EV owners will remain confined to those able and willing to spend large sums on buying a car. Therefore, they seem to believe shelling out £3,000 for a recessed gully is a relatively small amount.London Councils seem to have over egged the risk of cables across pavements which are placed responsibly with suitable covers to avoid trip hazards and are clearly visible. If people are actively prevented from using them they will end up dependent on unreliable lamppost chargers or other third party providers making EV ownership even more expensive and inconvenient particularly in an area like Chiswick which  has a large number of terraced houses with no front drive.

While the platforms are reasonably well-kept, the rest of the station needs a thorough clean-up. The stairs are filthy and need jet-washing, and the ticket hall is in desperate need of a paint job. It must be thoroughly depressing for the staff to work in those conditions.

planning objections online- getting round the software bug

Veterans Association collecting money in Chiswick - questions.

I have concerns about the people calling themselves the Veterans Association raising money on Chiswick High Road and Turnham Green station.There is very little information about this charity.  We know that the largest charities for ex servicemen are The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes, Army Benevolent Fund, and there is also Veterans Aid and Veterans Gateway.  The Veterans Association has only been in existence as a registered charity for the last couple of years.   There is a previous charity with the same name that was removed, and it also got funds from another charity, Veterans Relief and Support which has also been removed. There are some great charities out there which work hard to help those in need- and I would encourage anybody wishing to donate to first research any charity in detail before donating money.

Forever Unoccupied post-redevelopment premises at corner of goldhawk road and British Grove

Is there finally a sign of life and a tenant has been found for the unoccupied ground floor post-redevelopment premises at the corner Goldhawk road and British Grove as the boarding has come down. It has amazed me that the landlord was so inactive in finding one for all these years since the site was redeveloped from a car show room to apartments for at least ten yearsIn future, instead of having an empty premises which has been an eye sore for  years, why  doesn't the planning department put in future a condition on planning permission that that if a tenant isn't found  within a set period of time, then the space has to be offered as a community space at a fare price for set period until a permanent tenant is found.

Why the Further Education System is Failing the Fashion & Textile Industry

https://ukft.org/fe-what-needs-to-change/Can't thread a needle?  Can't sew a button on or turn on an electric sewing machine?Whatever happened?  My parents generation could all do this - men and women.  In the army you had to be able to do this but you shouldn't need to join to learn!When I was young I was taught some these skills by parents and grandparents as well as at school.  What happened?I had a boss who threw away his shirts if they lost a button rather than sewing one on or paying or even just finding someone to do this.   What an unbelievable waste of resources!So now we have nametapes to be sewn on or names embroidered on games kit as new uniforms are prepared for a new year and parents who can't do this.  We also have youngsters going off to university who not only don't know how to do this but also still don't know how to look after their clothing ie doing zips up before putting washable clothes in a washing machine so that an open zip doesn't damage any other clothing especially knits...There used to be valuable advice in WRAP's Love Your Clothes Campaign...

Crime infested London

A close neighbour, a lovely sharp witted middle aged woman went shopping in Sainsbury this morning and came home distraught and in tears.She had left her shopping trolly for a matter of moments whilst inside the supermarket to gather some items off the shelves. On returning she found to her dismay her handbag missing. An opportunist had pounced and sneaked away with all the trolly's contents plus handbag holding all her vital personal effects.I have related this story merely to remind those out and about to keep their wits about them at all times.

Going to the dogs?

I've just read the front page article regarding a PSPO for dog owners and the requirements that could be expected of them.'The PSPO includes a requirement that anyone walking a dog in any public area must be able to show an authorised officer a poop scoop or disposable bag on request' Well, all this is fine and dandy but just who are these 'authorised officers'? How many of them will there be? How often will they able to patrol parks and open spaces? Really, what are the odds of someone actually being caught out and fined? You can make all the rules and regulations you like - but without the necessary manpower and will to see something through it's all waffle. It's the same old thing - lots of tough talk and at the merest hint of opposition the councillors will roll over and do nothing.

Black kitten found - W12

Has anyone lost or aware of a lost kitten near the west end of Goldhawk Road/Cathnor Park area?  I've found a black short-haired moggy (very cute) in a lightwell to the front of a house, wailing - probably about 12 weeks old, in good condition, clearly scared and wanting to find its way home. No obvious injuries. I have left it where I found it (protected/enclosed area) and alerted a neighbour who is going to put down some water. I contacted Village Vets Brackenbury, but other than checking for a chip (expected to be too young to have one), they can't assist any further i.e. they are unable to keep hold of it. BBC news article on illegal  migrant delivery drivers

Watching BBC breakfast this morning, I could not help but think about the many drivers hanging out on the Chiswick high road - how many of these are illegal migrants working in the gig economy for companies that turn a blind eye in pursuit of cash? I guess they know we don’t have  many police officers in  W4! Also, do we know if the Big Issue salesmen on Turnham Green are legitimate? There is a smattering  of similar looking  fellas in W4 and a number across London who  have the same shaky leg issue. We need to ensure our cash donations go to the true causes ie people who are homeless and need urgent support (and not some organised gang).Perhaps our local MP / councillor could address both points?

Chiswick is rubbish

I'm really getting upset over the different kinds of litter strewn around Chiswick. Our neighbourhood is rubbish, and it has been for many years now! I've finally said it "out loud", and it pains me to do so.The recent hot weather always encourages the picnic crowds that leave rubbish in the parks . When I was a child we had to make posters about "keep Britain tidy", and it was drilled into us to pick it up. This seems lost, as everyone is in it for themselves and just expect the council to pick it up (I guess). I have a young daughter, and I teach her this, but I don't think the school curriculum does. I'm sad to say that I wish the council had litter attendants to fine offenders. Forget parking , they would make a killing on litter.But this is overly simple, as another issue is that bins aren't emptied, and overflow constantly. The council rarely has a handle on predicted litter patterns or preventative rubbish handling and it just shows how inept and unimaginative they are . Would it hurt to tie an extra bag to park bins when is going to be hot? Ideally with a sign saying none food items only to guard against foxes? Of course if we were in Japan there would be no bins and people take their rubbish home themselves. So we are back to education , and how we can encourage our fellow neighbours to care about the neighbourhood?. Perhaps if we had litter wardens, they might educate and give the chance for an offender to repent a fine by picking up (the inevitable finger or eff-off causing an immediate fine).But the final straw for me are the local businesses in Chiswick. I'm sorry to say this, as I like to support local, but why do they all think it's ok to heap their rubbish in the street every morning (particularly Sat or Sunday)? A nice walk onto the high street (with an idea to frequent their establishments) now always incurs the shame of walking past reaking/oozing piles of skank. There is a woodsman's saying "don't sh@t where you eat", and lately I interpret that as "don't eat where they ...". Sure, they will whimper this is what the council insists on, to which I counter, find a better way to save your livelihoods and take some pride! It's ridiculous .
While we are at it, why don't they take some time to sweep in front of their doors and remove the cigarette butts and other rubbish many of their clients leave (take responsibility for a change). Or (as it's not just cafes in this list of shame), clean the eggshells or greesy boxes nearby . And reflect on their stinky bags at 9am, roasting in the sun? In fact, why not have some staff do a local cleanup and show some community pride? It would be good advertising and show commitment.In sharp contrast, I smile at the "Abundance " initiatives to brighten our streets. But scowl at the rubbish between the lovely plants , and rarely stop to admire them as the oozing bags, buzzing flies and stench hurry me on.How can we change this? Other countries (particularly hot ones), seem so better organised.Bring back a beautiful neighbourhood, and not this rubbish legacy we have.

LA Fires - Inside the Burn Zone Now

This guy on YouTube has excellent and interesting content. If you're looking for something to watch, it's worth checking his content out. The latest video is on the LA fires and what it is like now, and he goes down many angles, including the rebuilding and the insurance route. Believe it or not, even homes not been burnt down are not inhabitable due to Toxicity inside and under the homes. One big factor in the toxicity they are now finding points back to EV cars. Rivercourt Road Closed Off?

Has anyone else been caught by the camera here? LBH&F have made the turning into Rivercourt Road off the A4 permit only. But the signs which tell you this are totally obscured by trees, and if you realise just when you've turned into it... then your only option is to reverse out onto the A4. Really badly and unfairly signed. Anyone else?

Living In-House with an Elderly Person

My niece has been living with my elderly mother for nearly 2 years but is leaving soon, to relocate to the north of England.Mum is currently self-sufficient but finds it comforting to know that someone else is around the house most days. Does anyone know if there are agencies of some sort who match and vet homeowners with those wanting a place to live?

This Saturday at the Barbican there is a one off show featuring Carla Thomas and the Hi Records Rhythm Section from Memphis plus others (full details on the Barbican website).I have a spare front row Circle ticket bought for my brother who cannot now make due to a recent operation, which I am happy to give away free if you can agree with me how to collect beforehand (I live in Bedford Park area). The M&S refurb has begun

I swear the final (sourdough) baguette can't have been cool before the trucks were on the High Road offloading materials and setting up what I suspect is an anti-traveler barrier? Let's hope the builders don't move onto another job, as is often the case (or maybe that's just my bad luck).

Dawat Devonshire Road

Anyone been yet? I'm a bit miffed it doesn't serve beer (or any alcohol for that matter), and you can't BYO either, so I'm keen to hear whether it's worthy of a (dry) visit. Call me a philistine if you will, but a curry sans beer feels a bit weird (at least to my palate).

Getting a grip on "The Weeds" and Gunnerbury Park Events

Two of the topics to be discussed at the Chiswick Area Forum to be held at St Pauls Grove Park - 7.30 start but doors open from 6.30 pm for the informal part of the evening. There will an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions. This is a good chance to see your councillors in action and decide if they are worth voting for next May.

Another incident at Fishers Lane South Parade junction

Not sure what happened here but it looks like there has been another collision at the roundabout near the underpass. This picture was taken yesterday evening at around 6pm A cyclist was badly hurt at this spot a few months back. In my experience the principal risk is that a lot of drivers don't know that people turning right into Fishers Lane, including cyclists, have priority.

Inexplicably, the two bins by the fountain at the beginning of Strand on the Green disappeared several weeks ago….predictably, poo bags and litter are now being dropped there ……… hello Hounslow ???

GPG summer drinks and survey presentation

The Grove Park Group residents’ association is holding its summer drinks event in the Pavilion School Kitchen, Grove Park Road, this Friday 11 July from 6.30-9.00pm. All are welcome. Members get a free drink on arrival. Non-members can join at a discounted rate of £5 and can then claim a free drink. Buffet food will be available to everyone. At 7.30pm there will be a presentation of the GPG’s action plan following last year’s survey of residents’ needs and wishes. Our MP, Andy Slaughter, will open the session. Chiswick crime wave

After being robbed several times tescos have been forced to erect a protective screen on the tills ,several shops are locking doors with one customer in at a time it seems there is a crime free for all on the high rd with shop lifting bike theft and car crime and no police presence to be seen chiswick on the slippery slope it seems , Chiswick friends not much help when trying to post about this I’m afraid

Expectations being managed on Hammersmith Bridge

Reading between the lines of what Fleur Anderson said about Hammersmith Bridge, it looks now pretty certain that there will be no money available for it after the current government spending review. This is hardly a surprise given the current fiscal position and the time scale she has been given is the same as the one for Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals. Looks like Labour plans to time more positive announcement on both in the run up to the next General Election assuming government finances improve and we'll just have to wait.

Community Fibre Broadband - Any views, good or bad?

We've been with Now TV broadband for several years.  The service has been fine but  their routers for FTTC customers like us are not going to be supported any more.  Don't really fancy their alternative suggestion of Now powered by Sky which gives us a new hub but a 24 month contract.  Anybody have Community Fibre broadband and are you happy (or not) with it?  They're offering a 12 months contract which suits us better than 24 months.

Leaking pipe. Need someone with tools to investigate

Looking for a plumber or similar who can investigate leaks (properly) and has a good track record of it. I have (well my neighbour has)  a leak which is very difficult to locate. Trust me I’ve pulled things apart  in my flat but can’t find anything. Maybe it’s not me, but doing my duty. The plumber will need a camera device as there are some inaccessible areas.Please only recommendations from neighbours not trades people or relatives/friends of the trade.
