Sun Comes Out for Wormwood Scrubs Runners

Bright May weather inspires 12 to achieve personal best times

The sun was shining brightly this morning, a welcome change from the downpours of recent days. The rain had loosened up the course a little down the back straight, but there wasn’t too much mud. I did actually fall over, but I think I was the only one.

After a record number of runners last week (105), at 78 today, turnout was down a bit, although that’s still a pretty decent number of runners for us. We also had 6 first timers at the Scrubs – hope you enjoyed it, guys.

After a briefing by run director Ben Le Rougetel, timerkeeper Paul Oppe set everyone going. People might have been a bit surprised by him saying ‘On your marks ... go’, but he told me afterwards that this is the correct way to start races over 800m, as people don’t need to ‘get set’ to run longer distances. You learn something new every day!

First over the line today was Dylan Kennedy, in 18:40, followed by Paul Woodgate of Thames Valley Harriers, in 19:49 and William McAvock of Serpentine RC, in 19:56.

First woman over the line was Andrea Broughton of Thames Valley Harriers, in 24:24, followed by Lucy Pollock in 24:45 and Vicky Lambert in 25:07.

We had 12 new PBs today – congratulations to Elliot Hughes, Dean Posthuma, James Hancock, Owen Williamson, Diana Leth, Joseph Nixon, Jake Hawley, Marcel Roe, Lynet Nyoni, Megan Siva, Rupert Harrison and Sharon Davinson.

The three fastest runners in terms of age grade were David Pitt (VM60-64) – 81.65% for the time 19:59 (4thoverall), William McAvock (VM45-49) – 72.24% for the time 19:56 (third overall), and Andrea Broughton (VW50-54) – 71.38% for the time 24:24 (26th overall).

Thanks to this week’s volunteers: Graeme BOXALL, Andrea BROUGHTON, Marion BRYDSON, Fraser BRYDSON, James DOE, Craig GUNN, Peter JORDAN, Ben LE ROUGETEL, Paul OPPE, and Fran SANTOS.

As you know, we rely on volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved in volunteering at the Wormwood Scrubs parkrun, please email wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun.com

Don’t forget that you can also donate to the Scrubs parkrun via the following link: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/wormwoodscrubs/aboutus/ We're fundraising for a defibrillator at the moment, so donations will go to a very good cause.

Finally, please, please don’t walk off with your token, as it's a hassle to replace them. We had a couple go missing today – if you find you’ve still got yours, please come and hand it back to us. Thanks very much.

Happy running and see you next week,

Andrea
