August 31, 2024
The Arts Society Chiswick’s September lecture is titled “NG 200 Celebrating 200 Years of the National Gallery”.
It is to be given by painter, guide and lecturer Lydia Bauman who has taught at London's National Gallery for more than 35 years, and intermittently at Tate Gallery and National Portrait Gallery as well as collections such as Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Hermitage and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the latter as a guest speaker for travel companies.
She will be speaking on Thursday, 19 September at 8pm at POSK on King Street, Hammersmith, a week later than the usual second Thursday of the month, to avoid conflict with the Chiswick Book Festival.
.
2024 marks the bicentenary of the National Gallery which is home to one of the greatest collections of European art, it is also a repository of headline grabbing stories surrounding acquisitions, controversial conservations, thefts, film appearances, acts of vandalism and scandals… In this lecture Lydia Bauman will tell those stories against the backdrop of some of the most glorious masterpieces in the collection.
Olivia Freeman, Chair, The Arts Society Chiswick said, “In its bicentennial year, this is the time to learn more about the stories behind this building and its fabulous contents.” .
Doors open at 7pm, as does the private bar and the Lecture will start at 8pm with guests very welcome to join for a payment of £15 on the door.
