Painting is Dead… Long Live Photography!
The Arts Society Chiswick’s September Lecture
Can a photo be more artistic than a painting?

When the new process of photography was formally introduced and demonstrated in Paris in 1839, Delaroche is reported to have exclaimed “From today painting is dead!”. Join Aliki Braine to discover this was far from sounding the death knell of painting, photography in fact gave rise to a fascinating dialogue between both art forms.
Paris born but now based in London, Artist and Art Historian Aliki Braine worked for the National Gallery for 20 years now teaches at Christie’s Education and the Wallace Collection and exhibits her photographic work internationally. She will tell us about the birth of photography in the early nineteenth century and how its invention transformed and influenced the use, purpose and aesthetic of painting.

The lecture is taking place on Thursday, 14 September beginning at 8pm at POSK on King Street in Hammersmith. The doors will open at 7pm and there will be a private bar.
