Despite its relatively recent formation, the Dance Company of Chiswick School has finished in second place in The National Dance Finals.

The group was set up only five years ago with just a handful of students but had already won the regional finals held in London.

Now with over 80 dedicated dancers, the company performs regularly at school and community events, delivering more than 10 full-scale dance productions in the past year alone.

Focusing on long-form narrative performances, the company has reimagined classics such as Hamlet, Aberfan, The Battle of Troy, and A Christmas Carol through movement and expression. The group does not prioritise one style over another; instead, it draws upon the individual strengths of its students—developing their existing skills rather than conforming to a fixed technique. It operates a strict no-audition policy, welcoming students of all abilities and ensuring every dancer finds their place within the ensemble.

The holistic nature of the programme comes with aclose integration with the school’s Drama and Music departments. With students contributing to approximately 50 performance events per year, the synergy between disciplines has earned the school national awards and provided a dynamic platform for expression through dance, acting, and musicality.

The company's latest piece, Dreams Not Real, explores the interwoven dreams of a boy and girl. What begins as two separate narratives gradually merges into one shared experience, leaving the audience questioning what is dream and what is real. This work draws on ballet, hip hop, K-Pop, and lyrical contemporary styles. Inspired by the choreography of Guy Nader and Maria Campos, the piece explores the concept of an ‘essence machine’—a metaphor for being trapped within a relentless and inescapable cycle.

Mr Robinson, the schools Community Arts Leader said, “We were both delighted and surprised to win the London regional finals. To be at the Nationals, surrounded by such talent and creative spirit, is a true honour. We look forward to learning from others and celebrating the power of the arts together.”
