The current crossing point at Hartington Road
January 6, 2023
A promise by the Mayor of London for action on improving safety on a busy road in Chiswick appears to have been kept.
Local Conservative councillors had been lobbying for changes at the crossing on the A316 near the junction with Hartington Road where there was no pedestrian phase. This is despite it being quite heavily used by people accessing the river from this area.
Following concerns from numerous residents, Chiswick Homefields Councillor Jack Emsley worked with London Assembly Member Nick Rogers to bring the issue to the attention of TfL with a view to implementing crossing lights to make the junction safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Mr Rogers raised the issue at December’s Mayor’s Question Time, where he secured a promise from Sadiq Khan to investigate the possibility of a safer pedestrian crossing with the pledge of a reply by Christmas.
TfL has now confirmed it has launched a formal engineering assessment of the junction, with the aim to complete plans for an improved pedestrian crossing in the coming months.
In a letter earlier this week, the Deputy Mayor for Transport confirmed that TfL had identified at least two areas where changes to the junction could be made to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, including widening the pedestrian refuge island and implementing signals at the corners of the junction.
TfL is aiming to complete initial plans for the junction by the end of the current financial year in March, which can then be used to prioritise the site for funding to develop the design further, and undertake modelling as required from the next financial year beginning in April.
“This is a good win for residents in Chiswick who want to be able to cross at the junction between Hartington Road and the A316 safely, whether on foot or by bike,” said Assembly Member Nick Rogers. “This is an incredibly busy junction, and I’m glad that months of lobbying TfL and the Mayor of London have paid off and that we have been able to secure this important step towards a safer crossing.”
“It’s fantastic news that we’ve been able to secure the first steps towards a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists at the Hartington Road/A316 junction,” said Chiswick Homefields Councillor Jack Emsley. “I’m incredibly grateful to Nick for his hard work in lobbying both TfL and the Mayor of London on behalf of Chiswick residents to make this important upgrade. I’m looking forward to seeing the plans for the junction in the coming months!”
