Retailer Makes Plea to Clients to Respond to Traffic Consultation

Owner of Marmalade says no shopping equals no shops

Turnham Green Terrace after restrictions were imposed

The owner of the Marmalade Fine Jewellery store on Turnham Green Terrace has made a plea to customers to respond to Hounslow’s survey about traffic measures.

Simon Johnson says that his experience so far has been that the changes have not been good for business and points out that without shoppers there will be no shops.

Having run a business in Chiswick for the last seventeen years he reports that footfall has been severely reduced since the implementation of restrictions with a resulting negative impact on business. Clients are complaining about the traffic flow and opportunities to shop locally and appointments have had to be cancelled due to the lack of available parking.

Mr Johnson says, “After enduring 'Lock Down' along with everyone else this additional strain on our business is unnecessary, ill thought out and risks putting already beleaguered retail space under intolerable strain. We would like to see a more balanced consultative scheme that takes into account the need to address the parking, traffic, business and environment for businesses AND the community.”

He is urging his clients to give their feedback through the form provided by Hounslow Council about the measures which are being implemented on a trial basis through an Experimental Traffic Order. They will be reviewed after six months and the councils says that feedback provided by residents will be taken into account.

The Hounslow Streetspace programme has seen a wide range of traffic management measures introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The council says these measures include many that were put forward by residents during their Streetspace consultation in May - June 2020, alongside some existing projects which are now being delivered with greater urgency. The measures are intended to improve safety and social distancing for those making trips on foot or bike.

Marmalade is currently open 11am -4pm Tuesday to Saturday and if you would like to shop in the store or drop off or pick up an item for repair you can book online.
