QPR mourn the death of Club's honorary president
Queens Park Rangers supporters held a minute's silence before Tuesday (February 9) night's home game against Ipswich Town, following the death of the Club's honorary president.
Harold Winton died on Monday night.
"It is with deep regret that the Club has learned of the passing of Honorary Life President Harold Winton," the football club said in a statement.
"Winton passed away last night after a five year battle against cancer," the statement said.
Winton was part of a consortium that tried to take over the Loftus Road club after it went into administration in April 2001 but they failed to reach an agreement with former owner Chris Wright.
However, after QPR came out of administration in May 2002, Winton continued to provide the Club with financial assistance and is best remembered for his role in the signings of striker Doudou and defender Dan Shittu from Charlton.
In 2004, Winton was given the title of Honorary Life President.
In announcing the new role six years ago, the Club said of Winton: "The Board would like to thank him for his contribution to the Club, particularly in securing the services of Doudou, Dan Shittu and Marc Bircham. These players have collectively made significant contributions to the overall improvement in the quality of the team over the last couple of seasons."
Commenting on Winton's death, Chairman Gianni Paladini told the Club's official website: "We are all extremely saddened to hear of Harold's passing. He was a true QPR fan, who not only supported the Club through thick and thin, but also helped assist in helping secure the services of Doudou, Dan Shittu and Marc Bircham.
"He was a true gentleman and he will be missed by everyone at the Club."
