What to expect if travelling in the area in the weeks ahead
National Grid's major gas mains revamp around Shepherd's Bush Green begins today, Monday January 28.
The project, which is expected to cause major traffic disruption in the centre of Shepherd's Bush involves replacing ageing metal gas mains with tough new plastic pipes.
Here's what to expect if you are driving or travelling in Shepherd's Bush from now until the end of April:
Phase 1: Ongoing to Monday January 28
Preparatory work is now being carried out in Shepherd's Bush Green involving a single lane closure coming off Holland Park roundabout.
Phase 2: Monday January 28 to Monday February 25
The westbound carriageway of Shepherd’s Bush Green will be completely closed between Holland Park Roundabout and the W12 Shopping Centre.
Signed diversions will be in place and engineers will work seven days a week and extended hours to complete the job as soon as possible. The bus stops in Shepherd's Bush Green will be temporarily reduced and some local bus services will change for the duration of this phase.
Phase 3: Monday February 25 onwards for approximately eight weeks.
Single lane closures will continue on both Uxbridge Road (opposite Shepherd's Bush station) and Shepherd's Bush Green (outside W12 Shopping centre) as further gas mains replacement work is carried out.
The pedestrian crossing on Shepherd's Bush Green, outside West12 Shopping Centre, will be moved 11 metres away, but will remain fully open with people still able to cross the road easily and safely.
National Grid Construction Operations Engineer Patrick Nathan says: " Our work will help ensure people in Shepherd's Bush Green continue to have reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
" We’ve sat down with the local authorities and Transport for London to see how we can deliver this work with as little disruption as possible. If anyone has any questions about our project they are welcome to come and see us at the drop in events. Alternatively they can call us on 0800 096 5678."
The project concludes over three years of work by National Grid to revamp local gas mains. It forms part of National Grid’s ongoing gas mains replacement programme which is carried out in agreement with the Health and Safety Executive. Work is being delivered by National Grid in partnership with Skanska.
