Building in Shepherd's Bush Market is no longer used for the homeless
Affordable work space to be made available to creatives. Picture: Kindred Studios
A planning application has been submitted to turn a former hostel for the homeless into a workspace for artists.
Broadway Centre Hostel on Market Lane was formerly owned by the charity St. Mungo’s. They sold the building in 2016, and although they continued to operate from it after that point on a short term rolling lease, they have now completely vacated the site and moved their provision for the homeless and administrative functions to other locations.
YC Shepherd’s Bush Limited and Kindred Studios Ltd want permission to use the building for up to 18 months to provide affordable workspace to creative people. Their application does not propose any external alterations to the building.
They state that building could be used in this way until the remainder of the site is developed under the wider application proposals at Shepherd’s Bush Market which are currently in pre-application discussion stages with LB Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF).
St Mungo’s is located within the market site to the south of the Old Laundry Yard and to the east of the market stalls. It is accessed via Market Lane off Goldhawk Road.
The site consists of three buildings; the Day Centre, the Hostel and an accommodation block.
Kindred Studios is a charity which aims to support artists through the provision of suitable workspaces. It seeks to deliver 100% of its workspace at affordable rates as set out in the Mayor’s report which defines affordable as being between £18-£24/sqft.
.
The artists would take the space at Market Lane as it is and there would be no construction work required for them to move in.
Kindred Studios are in the process of building a permanent home in Ravenscourt Park, which they expect to move into in December 2021/January 2022 and they would initially take out a year-long lease on the Market Lane buildings running from January 2021 to December 2021.
It is anticipated that there would be 60-80 artists working in the studios at any one time.
