Centre built on former Canberra School playground
White City got a new health centre this week with the opening of the Canberra Centre For Health.
The new facility, which has been built on what used to be a playground at Canberra School in South Africa Road, is now registering its first patients with NHS GPs.
NHS Hammersmith and Fulham say local residents will be able to take advantage of services such as 'women only' health sessions, 'stop smoking' advice, physiotherapy, counselling and new patient health checks. Canberra’s healthcare teams will also be taking their services out into the community.
The centre will be open six days a week with extended opening hours, and in the coming months, patients will also be able to make appointments on Sundays.
Miles Freeman, NHS Hammersmith and Fulham Director of Commissioning, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the first patients though the doors of this exciting new development that puts health firmly on the agenda in White City.
“We know that the people of White City have varied and complicated health needs. For example, in White City more people have diabetes and respiratory problems than those in other parts of the borough and we want to change that. We’re confident the new centre will give residents the things they wanted from their local NHS and a whole lot more,” he said.
Before the new health centre was set up, the local NHS carried out a consultation to find out what White City residents wanted. Those who responded said they wanted a centre that was open evenings and weekends, services that went out into the community, separate services for women and men and greater help with long term conditions like diabetes.
