Health centre being built on overspill car park
A school playground that was used as an overspill car park on football match days will no longer be available, meaning more parking pressure on the streets when QPR are playing at home.
The playground at Canberra School, on the corner of South Africa Road and Australia Road, used to be used by football supporters driving to Shepherd's Bush to attend matches at Loftus Road stadium.
Now, NHS Hammersmith and Fulham are building a medical centre on the site.
“We are putting temporary GP and NHS dental services onto the Canberra School site,” said an NHS Hammersmith and Fulham spokesperson. “We have agreed with the school to use part of the playground space, which up until now the school hasn't been using - except for overspill parking for QPR on match days. The money we are giving the school for use of the space will allow them to redevelop the rest of the playground are which will be a great improvement for the pupils,”
NHS Hammersmith and Fulham say the new health centre will remain at the Canberra School site until the planned polyclinic opens in Bloemfontein Road: “We are keen to get new NHS services into the White City area. A major new health centre will be part of the redevelopment on the Bloemfontein Road site, but there is still a two year build time before the doors of the new centre can open. The services we're putting into Canberra School will be open by the end of this year, bringing much needed new services to the area. They will move into the new centre once it is built.
“We believe the work happening on the Canberra grounds will be a benefit for both the school and the wider local community,” the spokesperson said.
We have asked the Council if they are planning to make any more parking spaces available on match days and still await their reply.
