Local Lib Dem Candidate Responds To 'Clean Campaign' Call

Says current environment 'toxic' and slams PM over third runway 'broken promise'

Helen Cross, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Brentford & Isleworth, has called on local Conservatives to condemn Boris Johnson’s ‘broken promise on the Third Runway’.

Responding to a requests for a ‘clean campaign’, (made by Conservative candidate Seena Shah) Cross said: ‘I fully support a clean campaign, transparency and the rule of law. I also believe that politics should be conducted respectfully and honestly. Which is why I condemn Boris Johnson for his broken promise to the people of Chiswick on the Third Runway and his inflammatory use of language since Brexit.

‘I look forward to all candidates joining me in condemning: Boris Johnson’s broken promise to "lie down in front of the bulldozers" at Heathrow; the Conservative government's illegal prorogation of parliament; the breaches of electoral law by Leave.EU and the official Vote Leave campaign during the Brexit referendum; Dominic Cummings' Contempt of Parliament

With reference to transparency, Cross said,
‘I would also ask her to support me in asking the Chancellor off the Exchequer to come clean about the financial impact of the new Brexit proposal and its impact on the finances of people in Brentford & Isleworth and EU citizens in the constituency, and to publish the commissioned government reports in full.’

She added, ‘The current environment is toxic. We have seen women in particular targeted by trolls, the Polish centre in Hammersmith attacked and an escalation of on-line abuse. We will need to deal with this in the new Parliament. We need a more polite politics and we also need a more transparent politics so voters know who is funding parties.

“The Liberal Democrats are the strongest party of Remain and will be standing on a manifesto to stop Brexit by revoking Article 50.

“The Conservatives have selected a Brexiter in the constituency and if you vote for Labour you will be backing Jeremy Corbyn. The Lib Dems showed in the Europeans we can win in this seat and my message to voters is this country deserves better than Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn. Use this election to send them both a clear message: Stop Brexit.”
