Local Conservative Candidate Calls For A 'Clean Election Campaign'

Seena Shah wants a 'grown up environment' during this turbulent time

The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Brentford & Isleworth, Seena Shah, has called on her Labour and Lib Dem opponents to sign a 'clean campaign pledge' for the General Election.

The Clean Campaign Pledge seeks to hold candidates responsible for activists and Councillors on their side of the political debate, and provide a more grown-up environment for political debate at a time of increasing intolerance and vicious political attacks.

A Clean Campaign Pledge would state:

We the candidates pledge:

  • I will run a clean, positive and honest campaign based on facts and focused on the issues that concern the people of Brentford & Isleworth.
  • I will tell the truth about what I have achieved and stand for, and what others have achieved and stand for - and will not seek to deliberately scaremonger the people of Brentford & Isleworth through misleading claims about other party's records, motives, or intentions.
  • I will debate my opponents rigorously on policy, but my team and I will not engage in personal attacks or smears on others.
  • I will stick strictly to the spending limits and rules of the campaign as set out by the Electoral Commission and will not allow third parties to spend money on online advertising to support my campaign.
  • I will do all that I can to encourage my supporters to keep their campaigning clean - particularly on social media.

Seena Shah said: "People are fed up with harmful and divisive language in politics. Over the last few years, integrity of debate has been undermined by personal attacks and abuse in politics. Let's stick to the facts and challenge each other on our policies. Not engage in personal attacks.

"I look forward to a clean campaign here in Brentford & Isleworth. The choice is clear: All Labour have to offer at the coming election is more dither and pointless delay. We have a great Brexit deal. I will be promoting the positive Conservative vision for what is possible beyond Brexit, whilst focusing on exciting domestic policies for our air quality, schools, tackling crime, mental health, affordable housing and support for small business."

Liberal Democrats candidate Helen Cross has called on local voters to vote for the Liberal Democrats to stop Brexit.

Helen, a local businesswoman, said: “This General Election will decide the future of our country and constituency for generations. Voting for the Liberal Democrats is our best chance to elect a Government to stop Brexit.

“The Liberal Democrats are the strongest party of Remain and will be standing on a manifesto to stop Brexit by revoking Article 50.

“The Conservatives have selected a Brexiter in the constituency and if you vote for Labour you will be backing Jeremy Corbyn. The Lib Dems showed in the Europeans we can win in this seat and my message to voters is this country deserves better than Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn. Use this election to send them both a clear message: Stop Brexit.”
