The North Circular Road (A406) is to be reduced to one lane only in each direction between Chiswick Roundabout and Park Way from next Tuesday (23 April). Traffic jams are expected to result particularly in the morning and evening peaks.

This is to allow work to take place on the building of a central reservation. The work was due to start earlier in the year but, due to a delay on the nearby Power Road Bridge project, it had to be postponed.

Transport for London (TfL) have ruled out further delaying the work despite Hammersmith Bridge being closed and substantial traffic disruption taking place as a result. Gunnersbury Avenue is part of the section of the North Circular that was recently identified as the nation’s most congested and even longer traffic queues are expected.

They say they will work seven days a week – 07:30 to 17:00 on weekdays, and 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends – to complete the scheme as quickly as possible.

The work is expected to be completed by 27 May when the road at which point all four lanes will be reopened to traffic.

The commencement of the work will prevent any right turns from side roads between Chiswick Roundabout and Park Way and this will be a permanent change.

TfL say that the central reservation will make the road safer as it will separate opposing lanes of traffic, preventing vehicles using oncoming lanes to overtake. It will also remove the risk of collisions involving vehicles turning right onto the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue.

Once the central reservation is in place they will then begin phase three of the project: resurfacing the road and installing new road. They will need to implement further lane closures at various stages throughout phase three.

They say they remain on course to complete the scheme by summer 2019.
