An extension to the route of the 485 bus is due to come into effect later this month meaning that it will start to serve the Wandsworth Riverside development.
From March 25 the bus will begin serving three new bus stops in the housing development bringing local bus services closer to the thousands of people who live in Riverside Quarter.
The 485 travels between Wandsworth Town Centre and the southern approach to Hammersmith Bridge, via Barnes, offering passengers a route towards Hammersmith Broadway if they walk across the bridge. It also stops at the London Wetlands Centre. The route will continue to start and finish at the same points.
A consultation on the changes was held during February but no results from this have been published yet. Transport for London (TfL) had consulted in 2018 on changes to the route than would have seen it run via Putney High Street and Upper Richmond Road instead of via Putney Bridge Road and extend to Wandsworth Riverside Quarter. However this route proved impractical to implement and was abandoned.
The extension has been welcomed by Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Transport Clare Fraser.
She said, “This is good news for residents living in the Riverside Quarter who will soon be able to access a local bus service much closer to their homes than before. Extending the route will provide a decent public transport link to Wandsworth town centre, Hammersmith and other areas of Putney, including the High Street and will be particularly useful for older residents or those with a disability.
“We hope that this new service will encourage residents to make the switch to public transport away from cars and help support our Future Streets Strategy which promotes public transport improvements and better active travel options across our borough.”
Transport for London says it will closely monitor the revised route to ensure it meets the needs of Riverside Quarter residents and those living further afield. It has pledged to “keep these changes under review to ensure we continue to offer the best service we can”.
