Volunteers are not expected to match dedication of Beryl Carr. Picture: Ealing Hospital League of Friends

The Friends Café at Ealing Hospital is appealing for new volunteers to help keep its long-standing service running smoothly. The café, which has served patients, staff, and visitors for over 50 years, is operated by the Ealing Hospital League of Friends, a registered charity dedicated to supporting the hospital through fundraising and community engagement.
Volunteers are needed across a range of roles, including working the till, serving customers, preparing food, cooking, and helping with social media, marketing, and events. All necessary training will be provided, and the team welcomes anyone who can spare a few hours each week.
The café is known not only for its friendly service and affordable refreshments, but also for its role in raising funds for hospital equipment and patient support. Since its founding, the League of Friends has contributed over £2 million to Ealing Hospital, funding items such as ultrasound machines, dementia ward televisions, and bladder scanners.
The current appeal comes as long-time volunteer Beryl Carr, who has dedicated decades of service to the café and the League, steps back from her regular duties. While her contribution has been extraordinary, organisers are keen to emphasise that new volunteers are not expected to match her level of commitment. Even a few hours a week can make a meaningful difference.
The café is located near the hospital’s outpatient department and operates weekdays from 9am to 4pm. Volunteers often describe the experience as rewarding and sociable, with many forming lasting friendships through their service.
