Ealing Surgeon Honoured with Doctorate
Sam Tross recognised for her contributions to medicine and diversity

Orthopaedic surgeon Samantha Tross has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Portsmouth in recognition of her contributions to healthcare and her advocacy for diversity within the medical profession. The accolade follows her recent appointment to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England earlier this year.
Tross, who works at Ealing Hospital, was among a group of recipients celebrated for their achievements across business, healthcare, media, and philanthropy. Others honoured included business leader Tim Campbell and UN Goodwill Ambassador Sabrina Dhowre Elba. Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of Portsmouth University, described the honourees as “exceptional individuals who embody the very best of human achievement and social impact.”
A Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon, Tross made history 20 years ago as the first Black woman in the UK to be appointed to such a role. She was also the first woman in Europe to perform Mako robotic hip surgery. Her career has been marked by a commitment to advancing inclusion in surgery, and she currently serves as Secretary of the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance.
She is a founding member and trustee of the British Association of Black Surgeons and has contributed to several initiatives aimed at improving representation in medicine, including the Diversity Review Panel at the Royal College of Surgeons and the Cultural & Diversity Committee of the British Hip Society.
In addition to her clinical work, she holds academic roles as Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the American University of the Caribbean and as an External Examiner for the University of the West Indies Medical School in Trinidad & Tobago. She has received a Black British Business Award and has been listed in the Black Powerlist of the 100 most influential Black Britons since 2011.
She qualified from University College London Medical School and completed her surgical training in London, Canada, and Australia.
