Positive Response to 'Tardis-like' Morrisons Daily

After months of uncertainty and two previously missed launch dates, the new Morrisons Daily on Turnham Green Terrace finally opened its doors on Thursday 11 June, exactly as advertised — to the surprise of some residents who doubted the store would be ready in time.

The opening was marked with a touch of theatre: a mini red carpet rolled out across the entrance, balloons framing the doorway, and free hotdogs handed to early customers. It was a confident launch for a store that, just three days earlier, still had no permanent signage in place and appeared far from finished.

Inside, staff were dealing with a few last-minute snagging issues with the refrigerated units, but the shop was fully stocked and trading from the moment the doors opened.

Many of the first customers leaving the store told us they were impressed by the layout and range. Several independently described it as “Tardis-like”, noting that the shop widens out significantly at the back — a quirk inherited from the long-running art and craft shop that previously occupied the unit.

One customer said the store felt as though it had been “designed for her”, praising the wide selection of snacks, drinks and meal-deal options she could pick up on her way to work.

Moheen, who works locally in the property sector, said he was struck by the breadth of the range but felt some prices were higher than at Marks & Spencer. The limited choice of fresh produce meant he expected to use the store mainly when other supermarkets were closed.

Alice, who works shifts and often returns home late, said the new shop would cut her weekly spending, as she would no longer be tempted to order a Deliveroo when arriving home after 11pm.

The launch brings an end to a protracted and sometimes uncertain build-up. The store was originally advertised as opening in late March, then May, then early June, with each date slipping as work continued inside the unit. On 16 May, Morrisons head office said the delays were due to “necessary property works”, while staff on site suggested they were aiming for 8 June.

By last weekend, the lack of external branding fuelled further scepticism. Only a temporary banner covered the old art shop frontage, and no fascia had been installed.

Despite this, activity inside the Chiswick unit intensified in the days leading up to the launch, with shelving, refrigeration and compliance systems installed and contractors working late to complete the fit-out.

The store is operated as a franchise by Liquorify Ltd, which secured a licence in January allowing alcohol sales from 6am to 11pm daily. It offers the standard Morrisons Daily range, including fresh and frozen food, household essentials, toiletries and newspapers, with a mezzanine level providing additional storage.

Its arrival will be welcomed by many residents following the closure of Tesco Express on Chiswick High Road last month.
