A new Morrisons Daily convenience store planned for a vacant unit near Turnham Green Underground station will not open until May, the supermarket chain has confirmed. Earlier leaflets had been sent to local residents indicating a launch in the last week of March.

Morrisons head office attributed the hold-up to "some property works that needed to be completed," describing the situation as a "slight delay." The unit, on the site of the former Turnham Green Art and Craft shop, shows little visible sign of fitting out in progress

A licensing application for the premises was submitted to Hounslow Council last December by franchisee Liquorify Ltd — a company that already operates a Morrisons Daily in High Wycombe — and was granted in January. The licence covers the sale of alcohol between 6am and 11pm daily.

The 1,660 sq ft ground-floor unit has been vacant since June 2024, when the art and craft shop closed after more than two decades on the street. The site was marketed by Whitman & Co at £90,000 per year, with a rateable value of £30,500. A business connected to the former owners has since opened on Acton Lane, near the entrance to the Sainsbury's car park.

When fully operational, the store is expected to carry the standard Morrisons Daily range — fresh and frozen food, household goods, toiletries and newspapers — alongside services including bill payments and parcel collection. Plans submitted indicate significant investment in the fit-out, including CCTV, an electronic refusals register, which documents the sale of age restricted products, and till-prompt compliance systems. A mezzanine level will provide additional storage.

The Turnham Green store is part of a major national push by Morrisons to grow its small-format convenience estate. The supermarket has been rapidly expanding its Morrisons Daily network through franchise partnerships and has set a target of reaching 2,000 convenience stores by the end of this year.

If Morrisons do manage to open the store in May, the launch will coincide with the scheduled closure of the Tesco Express on Chiswick High Road.
