Late goal seals points for Old Meads

A goal in the dying seconds of the match saved Old Meadonians face as they survived a thorough investigation by visitors to Riverside Lands on Saturday, Old Aloysians, who after an adventurous and aggressive challenge were unlucky not to share the points.
Meads started the game better and after only ten minutes were rewarded by a superb strike from a twenty five yard free-kick by Dan Salanson which bent round the wall into the top corner. With Meads’ flying strikers Colin Hawkins and Ed Glover for once held Aloysians came into the game and second team keeper Dave Needham was called on to make two good saves to keep them out.
Hawkins did have a shout for a penalty turned down but that was the extent of the hosts’ success before the interval. Just five minutes after half time the visitors were deservedly level when their striker broke through a gap in the middle to give Needham no chance.
The game then developed into an end to end affair and again Needham was called upon to show his growing confidence this time with a dash out of the area to clear. With less than a minute to go Meads’ centre back Ian Williamson was carried of with a cut foot which will keep him out for a month.
The referee had just thirty seconds on his watch after this incident but it was just enough time for Glover to deflect header into the path of Hawkins who got the jump on his marker to close in and beat the keeper.
