Meads make heavy weather

Old Boys’ Cup - Old Meadonians 3 John Fisher O.B. 1

Old Meadonians found themselves playing a third round cup game against visitors from three divisions below instead of their scheduled league game at Riverside Lands on Saturday.

They were also guilty of descending to the level of honest but artisan opponents who were allowed be more troublesome than their talent deserved culminating when the visitors took a deserved lead in the dying seconds of the first half.

A wake-up call from manager Rory Vermeulen in the interval gave an added air of urgency and strikers Colin Hawkins and Henry Turner brought a trio of brilliant saves from the Fishers’ keeper. The introduction of Kevin Quinn to the mid-field after twenty minutes stoked the fires further and it was his first touch through ball from which Hawkins lobbed the advancing keeper from the edge of the area to bring the equalizer.

Within a minute Quinn had proved his worth by adding a second from twenty yards. With ten minutes to go skipper Jack Costello nursed his ailing hamstring off the bench to spear in a low cross which Dave Butler volleyed in at the far post.

Team: Sayers, Williamson, Hanley, Butler, Salanson, Pointon, (Costello), Kearney, Rhone, McGuinness, (Quinn), Hawkins, Turner.
