Meads Hang on to league leaders

Amateur Football Combination Old Hamptonians 0 Old Meadonians 0

Old Meadonians are missing the power of last season’s top scorer Colin Hawkins, sidelined at the league’s pleasure. With fellow striker Steve Bowring on the bench carrying a back injury, the attack was left to reserve marksman Henry Turner and the pacy Ed Glover with new signing Danny Jacobs in support.

They struggled against a competent defence and it was not until Bowring came on with thirty minutes to go for Jacobs and Glover was given the space needed for manoeuvre behind the front runners that the side began to click.

Even so, on Saturday Meads spurned four good chances to bring home the points, the first after only two minutes when a shot from a narrow angle, in preference to a pull-back to a waiting colleague, proved to be the wrong option.

As usual Meads allowed their hosts to have more than their share of the ball whilst taking the precaution of snuffing out any presumptions the hosts had of putting anything on the scoreboard. They kept their own hopes alive to the end when in injury time Dave Butler and John Pointon had attempts cleared off the line.

Team: Sayers, Butler, Williamson, Hanley, Costello, Quinn, Pointon, Cope, Jacobs, (Bowring), Turner, Glover.
