Old Meads win ugly with late goals

Amateur Football Combination Old Wokinians 1 Old Meadonians 2

A scrappy and disjointed affair between two sides neither of whom displayed any decent form saw Old Meadonians take three points from newly promoted Wokinians and extend their unbeaten league to a year courtesy of two own goals late in the day.

Despite the constant and tireless prompting of mid-fielder Kevin Quinn Meads missed the sharpness of Colin Hawkins, currently detained at the league’s pleasure. With utility man Ed Glover in mid-field, reserve strikers Henry Turner and Danny Jacobs struggled with a bumpy pitch and hefty wind to make cohesive headway. Meads were only sparked into life when the pacy Glover was moved forward and Jacobs dropped back.

Consequently the hosts held onto a one goal lead taken immediately after the restart until twenty minutes from time when Quinn’s fierce cross shot and then Jack Costello’s cross forced timely defensive errors. Glover almost had the last say with a thirty yarder which came back off the underside of the bar.
