Meads set the pace

Amateur Football Combination: Latymer Old Boys 2 – Old Meadonians 5

Old Meadonians set out in defence of their league title with a bruising lesson for promotees Latymer at Enfield on Saturday. Although still not at full strength Meads’ work rate was always too much for naive hosts who were lambs to the slaughter.

Two minutes in skipper Jack Costello bent in a freekick from the right and Kevin Quinn buried a half-volley from ten yards. With twenty minutes gone it was three. First Dan Salanson put another free-kick across for Steve Bowring to head home and Salanson’s overlap was met by Quinn’s measured long ball for him to loop a header twenty five yards past a rooted keeper.

Just before half-time sloppy defending allowed Latymer a sight of the rabbit but thirty minutes later it was five when Colin Hawkins slipped past two players to cram the ball in from fifteen yards and Dwayne Rhone completed the rout after dumping a defender on the deck. The hosts were given another unnecessary consolation with five minutes to go.

Team: Needham, Salanson, Wapshott, Smith, Senat, (McGuinness), Costello, Rhone, Quinn, Cope, (Fox), Bowring, Hawkins.
