Chipotle, the global chain of Mexican grill restaurants is set to takeover the premises formerly occupied by Byron Burger on Chiswick High Road.

The company specialises in tacos and Mission burritos that are made to order in front of the customer. The Chiswick outlet will be the group’s first outside central London.

A planning application for work on 227-229 Chiswick High Road has been submitted by the company for work at the site including the repositioning of the front door. It is expected that this work will be complete in May with the company planning a summer opening.

The chain was founded by Steve Ells on July 13, 1993, in Denver, Colorado and had 16 restaurants when the McDonald’s Corporation became a major investor. By the time McDonald’s sold its shares in 2006 there were 500 branches of Chipotle and it continued to expand to over 2,000 locations with 45,000 staff.

The first Chipotle restaurant in Europe was opened in London in 2010 but expansion in the UK stalled and the group had only seven restaurants in the capital by June 2015 with all but one of them in the City of London or the West End. The company had previously put the slow growth in the United Kingdom down to British unfamiliarity with Mexican foods although other chains with a similar offering have expanded here during that period.

Jacob Sumner, Chipotle’s European Operations Director, said, “Chipotle is helping to cultivate a better world by serving responsibly sourced, classically-cooked, real food with wholesome ingredients without artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

"We are excited to bring Chipotle’s real food to the Chiswick community with our new restaurant opening on Chiswick High Road this summer. As the first Chipotle restaurant located outside of central London, it will offer an amazing, open-fronted dining room as well as a convenient walk-up window for guests picking up digital orders.”
