Cllr Ron Mushiso believes litter picking is a good way to stay active and help the local environment.

He says, “We need more individuals and families to join the Council Environmental Champion schemes and give litter picking a go. There are several other aspects to be involved with as part of the scheme including helping to preserve areas for wildlife, organising community event and greening up Chiswick.

“Litter picking has become a central part of the community champion’s scheme in Chiswick because it is fun, interactive and carries a strong local message about our environment. When passers look on and see people, young and old, humbly giving up their time to clear up an area; they think undoubtedly think twice about their actions.

“Moreover there are personal health benefits to be gained from litter picking for an hour on Sunday afternoon. We have come to define health as the state of physical, social, emotional wellbeing. That is exactly what every volunteer seems to get out of our group activities.

“Walking for up to an hour with green Hounslow Highway bag in one hand and a litter picker in another, will benefit a person’s cardiovascular system, strengthen bones and burn loads calories. Our NHS has always recommended walking as primary exercise for exactly these reasons. There is even an Active 10 tracker app that is free to download and pair up to any physical activity including a litter picking.

“The social aspect of getting out and about meeting people should never be underestimated. We have some much more in common than what social media suggests. That proof can always be found when we interact at these local events.”

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

We are therefore asking our readers to consider offering financial support to these efforts. Any money given will help support community and public interest news and the expansion of our coverage in this area.

If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

If you do support us in this way we’d be interested to hear what kind of articles you would like to see more of on the site – send your suggestions to the editor.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site. For £30 plus VAT per month you will be the designated sponsor of at least one article a month with your logo appearing if supplied.
