Civic spirit showed by dozens of locals who braved cold weather to pick litter
The Turnham Green Clean Up project was a resounding success. Despite the cold and intermittent rain showers, resident turned up ready to roll their sleeves back and kick start the this great local initiative. Among those in attendance were Cllrs, Ron Mushiso , Ranjit Gill and John Todd (and his dog).
They were joined community leaders Janet Omondi, the trustee of the Riana Development Network, Theatre Director Tim English, and Chiswick Oasis project founder Andrea Carnevali and Marie Rabouhans the chairman of the West Chiswick & Gunnersbury society. Several families were on hand with their children all chipping and talking turns to use the pickers and the green bags provided by Hounslow Highways.
Cllr Ron Mushiso (Turnham Green ward) said: "There was a real energy among the group which swelled to 28 in total in minutes. Within the hour we had circumnavigated the entire perimeter of Turnham Green and the outer pavements. We focused a lot energy at the Rockery which has been under the custodianship of the Friends Of Turnham Green.
"It was all hands on deck as we foraged for plastics and all forms
of litter wedged between the perimeter fences an green. We walked together
as one large group picking litter and sharing conversations about Chiswick
and our shared environment. The younger members of the group listened
intently and seemed to appreciate more so than ever, the importance of
keeping our shared spaces tidy. After an hour of great work, and several
bin bags later, we had completed the sweep of the green and it was off
to Christ Church for some refreshments and cake. Many thanks Richard Moy,Jill
Spencer, Paula King and Mitra Alam for their contribution to this initiative.
"I wanted this initiative to be positive message for your young people amid the recent events that have led to concerns about their safety. I wanted to restore their pride in our community, and I was fortunate enough to come across a group of parents were wishing for the same response."
They have already agreed to meet again next month on 24th February to sweep the Chiswick Back Common.
