Boris Johnson Visits Chiswick Ahead of Local Elections

Says it is 'where the really important and successful people come'

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson made a flying visit to Chiswick this Friday (19 January) to support local Conservative Party candidates in the forthcoming local elections.

Fresh from his summit with visiting French President Emmanuel Macron, where he launched the idea of a 'Channel bridge' between France and the UK, he arrived to a chilly Chiswick High Road at around 3pm and cheerily greeted the crowd of local party activists and prospective candidates for the 3 May elections, who were waiting outside High Road House.

As the group went inside to get a warm drink and have a chat, chiswickw4.com asked him the purpose of his visit and he replied "to support the party candidates in the local elections."

When he was told that Prince William had visited HRH last week, he remarked,"Obviously Chiswick is where the really important and successful people come."

After a pep talk chat with the group, which included councillors John Todd and Sam Hearn, and would-be councillors Joanna Biddolph, Ron Mushiso and Ranjit Gill (Turnham Green ward) and prospective candidates for Feltham and Brentford, the former Mayor then had a walk along the High Road and Turnham Green Terrace where he popped inside to greet local businesses.

While there wasn't much time for people to raise issues during his half hour walkabout, the pressing matter of the cycle super highway for Chiswick High Road was clearly on the mind of the man who started the 'Boris Bikes' scheme.

He raised the matter of the CS9 with the staff at Fudges Cycle Store and asked for their views and got some tongue in cheek answers. It has not been revealed whether the subject came up for discussion during his talks with the party faithful. Local Conservative councillors are opposed to the cycle superhighway in its current form.

Then it was onto Whitmans for photos, LA Menswear, the Chiswick Cobbler, a word for Chris's Fish and Chips staff, a long chat with Simon at Marmalade.

Jimmy’s the barber on Elliott Road offered him a haircut, and there was a bit of banter at Baker’s fruit and veg stall and the flower sellers outside Le Pain Quotidien.
