Architectural Prize for the Dukes Meadows Footbridge

The Dukes Meadows Footbridge, the new pedestrian bridge by the Thames in Chiswick, was a winner at this year’s New London Awards (NLA).
The structure, which provides a shorter route along the Thames Path under Joseph Locke’s Grade II listed Barnes Bridge, had been nominated in the Transport and Infrastructure category. The winners were announced at a ceremony during a lunch at The Guildhall on Wednesday 15 November.
The steel and aluminium design by Moxon Architects was opened earlier this year having gained planning permission in 2019.
The NLA said, “The distinct structure responds to complex geometric constraints to provide a fully accessible route and an entirely new experience of the river environment.
“The bridge improves infrastructure, accessibility, safety and leisure opportunities in the Dukes Meadows area. It plays a vital role in an active travel network connecting recreation amenities with public transport links on the far side of the river. Like all properly considered civic infrastructure, its impact and value far surpass its physical boundary and construction cost.
“With climate resilience and lifetime maintenance at the centre of design, the community will continue to benefit from the project for the next 120 years.”

NLA describes itself as an independent, purpose-led organisation for everyone with an interest in London’s built environment. It seeks to make positive change by a programme that engages the broadest possible audience across government, business and the public.
Its annual awards, which are supported by the Mayor of London, celebrate all scale of projects, from community-led to large-scale mixed-use developments, both built and unbuilt. There are 12 categories and 3 special prizes with the Battersea Power Station project taking the overall prize this year.
The Dukes Meadows Footbridge could make it two awards in a week as it has also been shortlisted in the in the Infrastructure and Transport category in The Architects’ Journal Architecture Awards.
The winners are due to be announced on 22 November at a ceremony at the Hilton Metropole in London.
