Dukes Meadow Footbridge by the River Thames in Chiswick has been shortlisted for a prestigious architectural prize.

The footbridge is among 140 projects across 21 categories that have received nominations in what aims to be an annual showcase of the best built projects in the UK.

It has been nominated in the Infrastructure and Transport category in The Architects’ Journal Architecture Awards.

It is one of the smaller projects to be nominated in this section. The others are:

  • Luton Direct Air Rail Transit by Arup and Knight Architects
  • Barking Riverside Pier by Beckett Rankine Marine Engineers and Anthony Carlile Architects
  • Elizabeth Line: line-wide design by Grimshaw
  • Brent Cross Town Substation by IF_DO
  • Bond Street Elizabeth Line Station by John McAslan + Partners
  • Barking Riverside Station by Weston Williamson + Partners
  • Paddington Elizabeth Line Station by Weston Williamson + Partners

The structure allows people walking the Thames Path to continue by the river under Barnes Railway Bridge without the previous diversion.

The steel and aluminium structure design by Moxon Architects was opened earlier this year having gained planning permission in 2019.

Chiswick Homefields councillor John Todd, who Chaired the Dukes Meadow Footbridge project since its inception said, “I'm delighted to learn our Footbridge is on the shortlist for a respected award.

“The competition is tough, but the sophisticated design and complex engineering combine to make a powerful case for recognition.”

The judges, who have started visiting every shortlisted scheme and will continue to do so over the rest of the summer, include Eleanor Fawcett of Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, Sahiba Chadha of Cullinan Studio and engineer Webb Yates co-founder Steve Webb. Also on the judging panel are Sumita Singha, Daisy Froud, Russell Curtis, Eva Jiřičná and former AJ architecture editor Laura Mark.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Hilton Metropole in London, on 22 November.
