Southfield Liberal Democrats have welcomed the temporary opening of Front Counter at Chiswick Police Station and are campaigning for it to stay open permanently.

The front counter was closed two years ago as part of a cost cutting exercise by Labour’s Mayor of London.

Now with Hounslow Station undergoing refurbishment, it has temporarily opened for two months - until November. This is a big issue in Southfield and Liberal Democrats have campaigned to stop the closure of the station in late 2017. We were in fact the only political party to do so. We are once again raising the profile of this issue and urging the Metropolitan Police to keep the station open.

Liberal Democrats believe the closing of the front counters send the wrong signal to local criminals and residents. Chiswick residents often feel abandoned by the police. This came over very strongly at the public meetings held by the police eighteen months ago now and having a physical presence is very reassuring for people.

Elsewhere in London, Liberal Democrats in Wimbledon successfully challenged a similar decision by judicial review which led to the station being reprieved. It was announced last month that the Wimbledon Station will now house the Emergency Response Policing Team, which should help secure the future of the station.

The Liberal Democrat petition for residents in both Ealing and Hounslow to sign, has already collected 300 signatures. If you agree that the Chiswick Station should stay open permanently please visit www.ealinglibdems.org.uk/chiswickpolice to sign the petition.
