Staff and pupils from two schools in Chiswick set to merge next year have come together to create a community garden on Acton Green.
Chiswick and Bedford Park Preparatory School (CBPPS) and Orchard House School (OHS) will combine next year and, in preparation for this, they have been working on some projects allowing the schools to socialise, learn and work together.
The children are already aware of the world around them, and starting to discover as they grow, how they have the opportunity and power, to shape and protect it. This first joint project aims to encourage that interest in and understanding of nature
The schools have recently worked with Abundance London to open the garden. Planted by teachers, pupils and parents from both CBPPS and OHS, the two large raised flowerbeds, which are only a few minutes’ walk from both schools, are now home to a variety herbs, fruits, vegetables as well as bee and butterfly friendly plants.
The sign for the gardens, a painted wooden tree slice, was handmade by a Year 6 pupil from CBPPS.The garden is blooming in the summer sunshine and is already producing some edible delights. Some herbs were harvested and used in school lunches during the last week of term.
The project has had support from Ealing Council, Dukes Education, Wheelers Flowers and the Community Garden Team. A team of volunteers made up of staff and families from both schools who maintain the garden. The pupils from both school will also use it as an outdoor classroom resource.
