Rowing provision at Chiswick School is to be extended due to the purchase of a new coxed four boat.

It is being bought for the school by The Quintin Hogg Memorial Fund working with the Chiswick Rowing Trust and will allow the state secondary mixed comprehensive school to complete in local rowing regattas.

The school’s rowing activities are held at the Quintin Boat Club Boathouse and it has four rowing groups this year; ranging from novices in year 8 up to year 11s who have now been rowing for three years. The groups are led by Jackie Eastwood, Chiswick School Head Coach. The school says it has a strong group of year 8s who are looking to train up and begin competing against other local schools and clubs.

Dave Gorvin, Head of PE said, “The addition of this boat will certainly encourage and inspire the students to continue to row as they go through the school and hopefully some to continue into adulthood. As a school we are very fortunate to be so close to the River and have the ability to offer our students this opportunity.”

Quintin Hogg was a Victorian merchant who made charitable donations to sporting activities. When he was younger, he played football at international level and first-class cricket. He died in 1903 and the sports grounds in Chiswick were purchased in his memory with funds raised by public subscription and named in his honour. The Trust derives its income from a portfolio of Central London property and investments and aims to allocate all income to support students at the University of Westminster and other young people in the area.

The Chiswick Rowing Trust aims to promote the participation of younger people in sport, particularly rowing, by giving out awards and prizes and giving access to the facilities which it controls.
