Turnham Green Terrace has fully reopened after being closed for a week due to a collapse of the road surface outside the tube station entrance.

Work by Thames Water to repair the sinkhole was originally expected to continue at least until this Friday but the road was cleared on Wednesday afternoon (29 June).

The sinkhole appeared the previous Wednesday evening and added to severe traffic congestion in the area particularly on days when there were strikes on the transport system and the South Circular Road was closed between Chiswick Roundabout and Kew Bridge.

Congestion was severe on South Parade and Acton Lane as Hounslow Highways had designated this as the route for traffic unable to access Chiswick High Road via Goldhawk Road due to roadworks relating to the Cycleway 9 project.

More recently the traffic on these roads improved with the strikes over and the South Circular Road partially reopened.

Calls to reopen the Fishers Lane underpass during the closure of Turnham Green Terrace were not considered by Ealing Council and Hounslow Council's cabinet member for transport said she did not believe reopening would have alleviated the situation.

Opposition councillor Jo Biddolph said that councils needed to listen to residents and act 'flexibly or pragmatically' when emergency road closures take place.
