Sinkhole Closes Turnham Green Terrace

Latest indication is that road may be shut until next week

Turnham Green Terrace is currently closed to motor vehicles in both directions following the appearance of a sinkhole. It is estimated that the road will be closed at least until next Friday (1 July).

The hole appeared in the road outside the entrance to the tube station at around 7.30pm on Wednesday evening (22 June). It was covered over the following morning by Hounslow Highways who have placed barriers around the collapsed surface.

A sign placed by contractors on one of the barriers closing the road indicates that the closure may last for seven days.

The closure of Turnham Green Terrace has required the diversion of the E3 bus and resulted in traffic queues along Bath Road and South Parade and Acton Lane.

Problems with traffic are likely to be exacerbated by the national rail strike and disruption to local tube services due to action by Network Rail signallers.

Councillor Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Operational Services, said, “On Wednesday night, Hounslow Highways identified a road defect posing an imminent safety risk on Turnham Green Terrace. The road was immediately closed and area made safe while we work in partnership with Thames Water to establish the cause of the defect and extent of the damage.

“While urgent safety repair works are carried out the road will be required to remain closed for at least one week.

“Diversions have been put in place to provide alternative routes but we advise residents to avoid travelling in the area where possible.”
