Dukes Meadows Estate to smarten up its act

Local youths toil to improve their environment

Local youths will be taking part in a clean up of Duke’s Meadow Estate on Saturday 11th March, as part of the Council’s “Smarten Up” environmental improvement campaign.

The event is being organised by the community environment team (CET), the Youth Service’s detached and outreach team and the Friends of Duke’s Meadows to encourage people to help make Hounslow a cleaner borough and save some of the £3 million pounds spent every year picking up litter.

Following the clean-up, there will be football skills workshops, face painting, hair braiding, a bouncy castle and MC-ing competitions to encourage young people to get involved in the campaign to Smarten Up Hounslow.

Staff from the CET will be on hand to offer advice to residents about the campaign and offer advice on waste and recycling.

People who want to get involved should meet at the Friends of Duke’s Meadow at between 11am and 3pm, and should bring old clothing and sturdy shoes. All activities will be supervised and no experience is necessary, just the willingness to get stuck in and the wish to see things improve.

A spokesperson for London Borough of Hounslow stated "The council is striving to become cleaner, safer and greener. It costs £ 3 million a year to clean litter from our streets. That money could be better spent on improving public services. The council’s ultimate aim is to become a litter free borough.

"It’s time to “Smarten Up” and make Hounslow a better place to live, work and visit. We do our best but we need your help!"
