Customers of a Chiswick dry cleaner were shocked this week to find its premises closed up and their clothes locked inside with no indication of how to retrieve them.
It is understood that Clean Box at 3a Devonshire Road ceased trading after failing to reach an agreement on a renewal of its lease.
The freehold of the property was listed for sale recently and the particulars stated that the 1,380 sq ft unit which included the shop and the basement was being let to Clean Box at £57,500.
Its clients say they have been given no indication of what to do about items that remain within the shop uncollected.
We were unable to contact the owner of Clean Box but the proprietor of the nearby Top Hat Dry Cleaners, which is an unrelated business, said that he had spoken to the manager Zach after being inundated with queries from Clean Box customers. Zach told him that he had a list of customers and he was planning to directly contact each of them to arrange for a return of their possessions. He reportedly has said that he was unable to get staff to run the business which was the reason for the unheralded closure.
Other business owners in the area report that the machines were removed from the premises last weekend.
Clean Box Ltd, a company registered at the address, has a single director, Mr Qayz Butt.
The dry cleaning and laundry business has experienced challenging times since the pandemic and an increased amount of working from home and other similar businesses in the Chiswick area are understood to be considering closure.
