Andy Slaughter MP backing the RSPCA Fireworks Campaign
December 14, 2024
At Justice Questions this week I asked about the design plans for new prison places due to be built under this Government and what consideration has been given to the education, training, mental health, addiction and support needs of prisoners.
It is no secret that prisons are at capacity and most prisoners have very restricted time outside of their cell. The Justice Committee’s first major inquiry is on rehabilitation and reducing prison numbers. We want to know what can be done to reduce reoffending and how people can be supported away from a life of crime to one that integrates into society. A vital part of that is utilising the time spent in prison to break the cycle of reoffending and it starts with decent living conditions and recognising the vital importance of education and training along with good healthcare.
On Tuesday I dropped in to see the RSPCA and Dog’s Trust on their campaign for a Fireworks Bill. The Bill will seek to restrict the sale of the loudest fireworks from public sale and ensure sellers must have a license. I am supportive of this Bill for a number of reasons, but I know much of the driving force behind the campaign is due to how frightening this time of year can be for animals. Many of my constituents have also written to me in support of the Bill.
Wednesday evening was a busy time of popping into various events throughout the constituency, including Chiswick Forum at Chiswick Town Hall. It was great to talk to lots of people after the presentation and hear more about local initiatives. On Thursday I had the pleasure of unveiling a plaque at Latymer Upper School in celebration of their 400th year anniversary.
It was a pleasure to visit Independent Age on Friday to talk about their service and how they are supporting older people in our local community. I really enjoyed meeting the team and seeing how dedicated and hard working the staff are. In the evening I attended the Brackenbury Residents Association tree lighting where it was nice to catch up with residents in a festive setting.
Next week is the final sitting week before Christmas recess. The Justice Committee will have its final evidence session before Christmas, this time with the Lord Chancellor. There will be lots to discuss as some major announcements have come from her department this week, including prison capacity and a criminal court review. If any constituents are interested in watching these evidence sessions, you can do this on the Parliament Live website.
Best wishes,
Andy
