Remembrance and the Strand on the Green River Wall

Some good news locally after Hounslow Council agreed to fund the repair of the river wall at Strand on the Green. The wall has been separating from the towpath for some time and a survey last year deemed the risk of the wall falling to be high. Hounslow have set aside £400,000 for initial detailed surveys and inspections and are committed to the works to make the wall safe. Amy Croft, Cllr for Chiswick Riverside and Chiswick Calendar editor Bridget Osborne have been at the forefront of the campaign for the wall repair.
This week the Justice Select Committee visited Brixton Prison and Snaresbrook Crown Court. These visits are integral to the work of the Select Committee - they help us form decisions on topics for inquiries and keep is in touch with front-line services within our justice system. There will be more visits in the coming weeks.
On Remembrance Sunday it was an honour to lay a wreath at Chiswick War Memorial for the first time. For the last 40 years I have attended the services at Fulham and Shepherd's Bush, but I was grateful that my friend, and local Councillor, Wesley Harcourt was able to lay the Parliamentary wreath on my behalf at Shepherd's Bush Memorial.
I celebrated Polish Independence Day at POSK, the Polish cultural centre. It was a great celebration of the battles and achievements of the past century. UK politicians including fellow west London MP, Rupa Huq, Polish diplomats, and local people came together to remember the close bonds between our countries. Lots of engagement with local schools last week. I attended, and participated in, an assembly about democracy at St Stephen’s C.E. I may have forgotten some of my lines, but the children all gave great performances! Politics students from West London Free School visited Parliament for a tour and a Q&A and I also spoke with the Youth Select Committees on what it means to be a Chair of a select committee.
The War Memorial at Turnham Green
A quick update on Hogarth Roundabout as I was very pleased to see the support of the London Assembly who have called for Church Street to remain open. The assembly recognise the crucial access that Church Street provides and are calling on TfL to cancel plans to restrict access.
