Over 600 'Genuinely Affordable' Homes Coming to White City
Along with the new five acre public park to be called Exhibition Park
Over 600 new homes, described by H&F Council as 'genuinely affordable' are coming to White City.
Work has begun building 427 new homes earmarked for local people on the former Marks & Spencer’s warehouse site near Westfield.
These homes are part of St James' giant White City Living development, on Wood Lane, across the road from Television Centre, which will have more than 1,400 homes when completed.
Work has also begun creating the new five acre Exhibition Park, which will be open to both the public and residents of the new homes.
The developer originally secured consent for 298 affordable homes on the site, but since then an extra 129 have been added to make the total 427.
These homes consist of one, two, three and four-bedroom flats, with the first wave of residents due to get their keys in July 2019.
The council says another 89 new affordable one, two and three bedroom flats, secured for residents in White City as part of the negotiations around the planning approval for the £600 million Westfield extension, are almost complete, with residents moving in at the end of this month.
A further 71 homes have been secured in the new Ed City development in Australia Road, with 38 flats for key workers and 33 flats for social rent, and a former hostel called Lavender Court just south of the Westway is being renovated to provide a total of 45 homes - 21 with one bedroom and 24 with two, and including four with wheelchair access.
"This is part of our programme of delivering the largest amount of genuinely affordable homes in ten years," said Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
"For too long people have struggled to find an affordable local home. We’re taking a determined approach to correct that and I’m delighted that these beautiful new homes will soon be occupied by local families and key workers, such as nurses and teachers.
“So we’re really pleased to be working in partnership with Westfield to offer 89 local families the chance to move into genuinely affordable, quality homes."
After announcing the new homes, Cllr Cowan planted the first tree in the five acre Exhibition Park - one of 430 new trees that will be planted in the new park, along with grassed areas, flowerbeds and four water features, including a lagoon opposite 31 restored railway arches.
A new network of walkways, bridges and cycle paths is also being created along with new pedestrian routes which will create improved links with Westfield and the wider White City area, plus shops, playgrounds, restaurants, cafés and office space.
