St Stephen's Church Launches Roof Fund
With fund-raising events including Christmas Market on October 24
Well-loved Parish church St Stephen’s on Uxbridge Road has launched an appeal for £200,000 to renew its roof.
The fund was launched with a Michaelmas Fair on September 27, adding £2,400 to the fund, which already stands at £23,900.
Juliet Byford, Roof Fund Administrator and Chair of St Stephen’s Committee says: " This is a fantastic start to our appeal. The swell of local support is heartwarming and will I hope help us reach our target.
" Even people who don’t have anything to do with the church or St Stephen’s School, are donating to the fund, just because they realise the importance of St Stephen’s as a local landmark."
The next event in aid of the Fund is St Stephen's Christmas Market on Saturday October 24th, 11am – 3pm when the church and hall will host a sale of Gifts for an Inspirational Christmas and other favourites - a tombola and home made preserves, delicious home made cakes, baguettes and soup.
Yellow tote bags inscribed ‘THE SOUL OF SHEPHERDS BUSH’ are to be seen on discerning shoulders around the area, and these will be available for £5 each from the Christmas Market and at church every Sunday.
The Grade II listed church, when built by architect Anthony Salvin in 1850, was set amid fields in North Hammersmith, with hardly a house surrounding it. Today, the church holds a central position in the community, along with the adjacent St Stephen’s C of E Primary School.
The Church’s outreach programme includes a Monday Film Club: in the afternoon the Silver Screening provides lunch and a film for elderly people, and at the evening session, in association with StreetLytes, a hot meal is served to upwards of 100 homeless people and hostel dwellers, followed by a film.
