Volunteers invited to clear sunbathing spaces on Wormwood Scrubs

Community charity Groundwook is inviting Shepherd's Bush residents to come along to Wormwood Scrubs on Tuesday May 14 from 10.30am till 3pm to help improve the habitat for the common lizard.

The work will take place in the Martin Bell's Wood area of Wormwood Scrubs where by cutting back a small section of bramble and reducing the canopy of a few trees (pollarding) Groundwork will create a woodland ride allowing light to get to the ground and connecting current lizard habitat and potential lizard habitat.

The charity says lizards have very specific habitat needs requiring warm sunny basking areas and long grass and scrub in which to hide.

This volunteering day will create a patch work of these habitat types and hopefully increase the range of lizards.

Eventually it is hoped that there will be enough of the right sort of habitat on the Scrubs to link the populations on the north and south sides of the Scrubs.

Volunteers are advised to wear comfortable clothes they don't mind getting dirty. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided, along with all tools and equipment.
