High Marks in Hammersmith Academy's Fifth Anniversary Year

'Confidence factory' achieves best ever A and AS level results

Students and staff at schools across Shepherd's Bush are celebrating outstanding A Level results.

In its fifth anniversary year, Hammersmith Academy has achieved its best ever A level and AS level results.

A total of 70% of all grades were at A*-C with at least 98% at grades A*-E and particular successes in economics, geography, English and maths.

Head teacher Gary Kynaston said: " Our students have performed and got into the universities of their choice, which is testament to the hard work they put in with their teachers.

" I talk about Hammersmith Academy being a confidence factory, because that is what is required for them to be independent, step forward and follow their dreams."

Among the Cathnor Road school’s high achievers was 18-year-old Amelia Foy, who is going on to study psychology at the University of Bath after being awarded top grades in four subjects.

Amelia, from Ladbroke Grove, got A* grades in English literature and sociology, as well as A grades in psychology and history.

" I’m very pleased," she said. " I was predicted to do well and I worked hard but you never know. I have got a lot to sort out for going to university, but I can relax a bit now."

Returning from visiting family in Istanbul, Turkey, was 19 year-old Utku Aydin, who bagged a huge five A grades.

His clean sweep in physics, biology, chemistry, maths and Turkish means he will be off to study computer science at the University of Warwick.

"I have always been told I had potential and that I just had to apply myself and I’d definitely get to where I needed to go," said Utku. " I’m very happy and I’d love eventually to do games programming as a career."

Other jubilant students included Bolor Jamsranjav who achieved three A grades and will now study pharmacology at UCL.

"It was what I wanted to get," she said. "I think it’s the encouragement that the teachers and my peers provided me that made it possible for me to work hard and achieve my target grades."

Meanwhile, Nazik Ahmed achieved an A* grade and two Bs and will be going on to study Law at SOAS. She paid tribute to her teachers, saying: "They’ve always believed in me and never doubted my choices."

The range of career opportunities available to the Hammersmith Academy students was highlighted by some of this year’s AS level pupils.

Zack Fry, 17, explained that his studies in drama and maths, along with a BTEC in media would help him towards his dream of becoming a screenwriter.

Fellow AS level student Santiago Cerro, 17, added that the pressure would build next year, but that studying for chemistry, biology, psychology and English literature would help him into the field of psychological medicine.

Head teacher Mr Kynaston said that seeing Hammersmith Academy’s young people 'grow into fine young adults' was a proud moment.

" We are really happy because results open doors but it is the students’ confidence, desire and personal drive that get them through the door.

" After five years we have gone from a small cohort of Year 7s and Sixth Form to a completely full school.

" These results see Hammersmith Academy reaching ever greater heights and continued improvement across the board and I would like to thank the teachers and parents for their hard work and for the support they have given our students to achieve these fantastic grades."
