Local Eye Specialist Runs to Help Save Children's Sight

Shepherd's Bush resident Robin raises fund by tackling Ealing half marathon

An eye health specialist from Shepherd’s Bush has helped to raise £1800 for a leading international eye charity – British Council for Prevention of Blindness.

45 year old mum of two, Robin Percy - raised the funds by taking part in the Ealing Half Marathon on September 27 with her colleague, 32 year old Priya Morjaria from Wembley.

Robin is a Programme Manager at the International Centre for Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She works with WHO (World Health Organisation), to arrange support and advice for eye care programmes around the world, helping save the sight of thousands of children and adults.

A major part of her work is to help prevent ROP - a disease of the retina which threatens the sight of premature babies in Russia and Eastern Europe through providing technical advice.

Until now, Robin had never run any further than 5k at a time but since signing up for the Ealing Half Marathon, she has been training once a week in a local park.

" I've really enjoyed running," says Robin. " Having hit my mid 40s I wanted a new challenge - so you could say this is my mid-life crisis but instead of buying a motorbike, I've tried running instead!

" I've found it very therapeutic, not only for the exercise but also having that extra time to yourself. All in all it’s been a fun and great opportunity to raise money for BCPB and support their work."
