Trust pipped at the post in Football League Awards

QPR in the Community Trust were praised for their "fantastic work" after being shortlisted for the title of Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year in The Football League Awards 2011 - the annual awards ceremony that celebrates on and off pitch excellence across The League's 72 clubs.

The trust were just pipped at the post, with Southend United being awarded the title at the awards ceremony, held on Sunday March 20.

But Liz Lowe, Citizenship Manager at award sponsor Coca-Cola Great Britain said: "Coca-Cola Great Britain is proud to be associated with an award that celebrates some of the most fantastic work carried out by Football League clubs off the pitch. Congratulations to all the clubs who entered: the standard of submissions into this category just gets higher each year."

QPR in the Community Trust says its aim it to use the power of the football club to forge stronger & deeper connections with its community.

The Trust, a registered charity, has already won a Silver Award from the Football League Trust for its range of projects which include Kickz schemes to engage young people, soccer schools, women's and girls' teams, the Tiger Cubs team for young people with Down's Syndrome and teams for disabled players including a new team called QPR Sparks for young people with celebral palsy.

Trust CEO, Andy Evans says: "We're proud to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award. It's great that our work within the Trust is recognised for the wider role it plays in the local community.

" We aim to encourage participation from all areas of the community by working in partnership with others. We have improved the quality of life for the Tiger Cub players and their families and through that the Trust has developed a strong connection with the whole of the Tiger Cub family."

Six teams including  QPR were nominated for the title of Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year. As well as Southend United, the other contenders were AFC Bournemouth, Dagenham & Redbridge, Derby County and Stevenage.
