Greenaid musical evening boosts Street Child's work in Sierra Leone

Greenside Primary pupils have taken to the stage to help the charity Street Child fight the ebola crisis in west Africa.

Children from the school in Westville Road staged a musical evening - dubbed Greenaid - and raised more than £1,000 for Street Child, and its work on the ground in Sierra Leone.

Staged in the school hall, where tickets were £2 and further funds were raised through T-shirt sales, the event was a great success.

" It was a really fab night full of live song performances from classes, the choir, a dance performance and videos – all to songs by musicians who changed the world in some way with their music," sats deputy head Rebecca Tossell.

The nursery class performed The Specials' Enjoy Yourself, reception class did Bob Marley's Three Little Birds, Year1 did Abba's Waterloo, Year2 rewrote Amazing Grace to fit their recent study of Nelson Mandela and the changes he made in the world, while Year3 did a Motown Medley.

Year4 performed Bob Dylan’s anthem Blowing in the Wind, while Year5 made a music video of The Beatles' Help and Year6 did two acts, Smells Like teen Spirit by Nirvana and Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley.

" Street Child is our school charity, and we raised money to try and help the ebola crisis and get more children educated in Sierra Leone,” said Rebecca. "We raised just over £1,000, which is really impressive for our first fundraising event like this, and for our little one-form entry school."
